OMAHA, Neb. ? Freshman Ethan Finlay scored the game-winning goal and rookie Brian Holt helped the Bluejay defense post a shutout, as the fourth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team blanked Portland 3-0 Friday night at Morrison Stadium in the 12th annual Diadora Challenge. The win keeps the Bluejays undefeated in 22 matches all-time at the Diadora Challenge (17-0-5) and moves the Jays to 2-0-0 on the year.
Finlay put the Bluejays ahead with his first career goal in the 40th minute. Jeff Thayer and Tucker Sindlinger worked the ball through the box, with Sindlinger sending a crossing pass to Finlay. The rookie headed in what proved to be the game-winning score at 39:17.
“I thought that Portland was better than we were in the first half,” said Bluejay head coach Bob Warming after the win. “But sometimes you're going to have nights like that, where we had to play brilliant defense in the first half, and wound up scoring a great goal.
“In the second half, I thought we made good adjustments as we stopped their wide midfielders from dominating the game and that led to a great half. I think it is remarkable what our freshmen are doing, between Brian Holt playing an outstanding game in goal, to Ethan Finlay buying into our work ethic, and because of that hard work he gets a goal. Greg Jordan keeps getting big stops in the midfield and Kris Clark was great again too.”
The Jays tacked on two more goals in the second half. Seniors Tim Walters and Andrei Gotsmanov combined on the second goal of the match, as the pair flustered the Pilots into a give-away inside the box. Walters flipped the ball to Gotsmanov, and the National Player of the Year candidate blasted it past Portland keeper Austin Guerrero for his second goal of the year.
CU's other player on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, Byron Dacy, scored his first goal of the year in the 86th minute on a penalty kick. The kick was awarded to the Jays after Chris Schuler was taken down in the box.
Holt was credited with three saves in his first career shutout, as his play around the goal was outstanding Friday night. The redshirt freshman cleared numerous other potential scoring chances from the Pilots (1-1-1) attack to keep them off the board.
No. 23 Saint Louis topped UC Riverside 3-0 in the first match of the Diadora Challenge earlier on Friday, led by a two-goal, five-point performance from one of SLU's Hermann Trophy candidates, Kyle Patterson.
The Diadora Challenge concludes Sunday at Morrison Stadium with SLU taking on Portland at 11 a.m. The Jays then play host to UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
