
Women Win Eighth Straight, Top Lady Bears 74-61

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Kelsey Woodard led four Bluejays in double figures with 18 points, as the Bluejays won their eighth consecutive game Friday night at Missouri State, 74-61. The victory was Creighton's first in Springfield since 2002, snapping a six-game skid on the Lady Bears' home court. The Jays improved to 13-8 on the season and 8-2 in the MVC, while MSU dropped to 6-15 overall, 2-8 in the Valley.
The Lady Bears owned their only lead of the game when Jaleshia Roberson drained a three-pointer 46 seconds into the game to give the home team a 3-2 lead. Megan Neuvirth drained two free-throws on CU's next possession and the Jays never again trailed. Creighton built up to a 10-3 lead after back-to-back three-pointers from Woodard. Chevelle Herring hit CU's third three-pointer on three attempts before the first official timeout.
A three-pointer from MSU's Maggie Dwyer made the score 15-12 in favor of CU with 12:46 left in the first half, the Lady Bears would not get any closer in the game. CU led by as many as 11 in the first half before heading to the locker room up 36-29.
The Bluejays opened the second half with an 11-4 run to push ahead to 47-33. CU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, including its largest lead of 18 at 72-54 with just over two minutes to play. The visitors wrapped up their first trip to the new JQH Arena with a 13-point win.
The Jays shot 50 percent from the field in the win, including 59.1 percent after halftime. CU out-rebounded the Lady Bears 38-29 and swiped nine steals in the victory.
Woodard finished with a game-high 18 points, making 3-of-9 three-pointers in addition to her two assists and two steals. Neuvirth added 15 points, team-high eight rebounds and five assists. Herring chipped in 14 points, three assists and three steals, while she was 5-of-7 from the field and made all three of her three-point attempts. Kristina Voss had a dozen points and six boards, making 5-of-6 shots from the floor.
Kelsey Crites added seven points and seven rebounds off the bench, as all five CU reserves played in the victory.
Casey Garrison led the home team with 16 points, with seven coming in the final 3:06 and five in the final minute. The Lady Bears shot just 35 percent in the game and made only 5-of-19 three-pointers (26.3).
Creighton heads to Wichita State on Sunday looking to improve upon its eight-game winning streak. A win on Sunday would mark CU's longest winning streak under Jim Flanery and the longest since the 2001-02 Jays won 10 straight.
