OMAHA, Neb.- The Creighton baseball team lost game one of its doubleheader against South Dakota State Sunday, 4-2 at the CU Sports Complex.
South Dakota State got on the board first as Jesse Sawyer hit a two-run home run to left off starter Jeremy Hauer.
The Bluejays got back into it in the bottom of the third on a unique play. Vicente Cafaro hit what looked like a routine flyball to right field, but the ball got caught up in the wind and drifted out of the rightfielder's reach, allowing Cafaro to get to third on a triple and have Darin Ruf score the first run of the game for Creighton.
SDSU then extended its lead in the top of the fifth as Joel Blake hit a towering shot to left, for the team's second two-run home run of the day, making it a 4-1 game.
The Bluejays threatened to tie the game in the fourth, as the first three men all reached base, highlighted by Ruf's double in the right field corner, bringing home Robbie Knight, and putting runners on second and third with no one out. After a walk to T.J. Roemmich loaded the bases with just one out, Nick Becker grounded into a 4-6-3 inning ending double play to kill the rally. At the end of four it was 4-2 in favor of the Jackrabbits.
South Dakota State had an opportunity to extend the lead even further in the seventh as Tony Martin singled to right and Billy Stitz rounded third heading for home. Fortunately for Creighton, Roemmich threw a rope to the plate to throw out Stitz and keep the deficit at just 4-2.
Creighton and South Dakota State will play game two of their double header at 3:25 p.m., at the CU Sports Complex.
