OMAHA, Neb. ? Creighton forced 22 turnovers and limited Indiana State to just 11 field goals in a 54-35 women's basketball victory Thursday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The win, coupled with a Drake loss, secures the No. 2 seed for the Bluejays in the upcoming State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Jays improved to 18-10 overall and 13-4 in the MVC with the victory.
A sloppy first half saw both teams shoot an identical 27.3 percent from the field, with the Sycamores (14-14, 10-7 MVC) hitting 6-of-22 shots and the Jays making just 9-of-33 from the field, including 4-of-18 from beyond the arc in the first half. CU forced 14 turnovers in the first half and converted those into 12 points to own a 25-17 lead at the break.
Indiana State made one of its first 13 shots in the second half, as the Bluejays built to a 21-point lead, up 40-19 with less than 10 minutes to play. In fact, the Sycamores had just two field goals in the second half until making three in the final 68 seconds of the game to finish 5-of-23 after halftime.
The Jays shot moderately better in the second half, making 11-of-31 shots from the field to finish the game at 31.3 percent. The Jays launched a season-high 32 three-point shots, but hit only six.
ISU's 35 points were the fewest by a Bluejay opponent since Nebraska Wesleyan scored 31 on Nov. 28, 1978, while they were the first CU opponent to not reach 40 points since the National College of Education on Jan. 22, 1983. ISU's 11 field goals and 24.4 shooting percentage were also season-lows for a CU foe.
Kelsey Woodard led all players with 15 points, making 3-of-9 three-pointers to move her three-point total to 72 on the season. In surpassing 70 trifectas in a season, she becomes the fourth player in school history to reach that mark.
Megan Neuvirth had 10 rebounds, seven points and tied her career-high with seven steals. Her seven swipes give her an even 200 in her career, good for seventh in school history.
Junior Chevelle Herring, who entered the game with one career blocked shot, swatted two in the game and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds to help the Jays out-rebound ISU 44-38.
Kelsie Cooley and Sarah Paul led the Sycamores with 10 points each.
With Drake's loss to Illinois State, the Redbirds secured the MVC regular-season title and locked the Bluejays into the No. 2 seed in next week's Valley tournament in St. Charles, Mo. CU will play the winner of the No. 7 seed vs. No. 10 seed contest in a quarterfinal match up at 6 p.m. next Friday at the Family Arena.
The Bluejays close out the regular-season and play the final Creighton basketball game at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. Kristina Voss and Michelle Kaus will be honored following the game on Senior Day.
