
Baseball Drops Caravelle Resort Opener, 8-2 to Stony Brook

CONWAY, S.C. - The Creighton baseball team lost 8-2 to Stony Brook, Friday afternoon, in the opener of the Caravelle Resort Classic at Watson Stadium located on Coastal Carolina's campus.
The Bluejays got their offense started in the second inning as Nick Becker doubled to right with two outs. He gave CU a 1-0 lead when scoring on a Jimmy Swift single to left.
Stony Brook responded with a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the inning as the team had runners on first and second. Steve Marino doubled into the ally in left center to bring home SeaWolves Michael Tansey and Steve Mazzurco, to make it 2-1 in favor of SBU.
Ian Dike hit the first home run of his career in the top of the third to tie the game. Dike's bomb came on a 2-1 pitch that he hit to left center.
Tansey's second run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth when he homered to the same spot as Dike, for his second long ball of the season. It was a solo shot, to make it 3-2 heading into the fifth.
The SeaWolves extended their lead to 52 in the bottom of the fifth as centerfielder Brian Witkowski hit another two-out, two-run home run to left field.
SBU put the game away in the eighth as catcher Nick Thode hit a three-run home run to left center off of Bluejay reliever Kirk Clark.
Getting the loss for the Bluejays was the starter Jeremy Hauer (0-2). He went 5.0 innings allowing five runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Creighton will resume play at the Caravelle Resort Classic on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Albany, as it plays the first of two games on the day. The Bluejays will again play at 3:00 p.m. against host Coastal Carolina.
NOTES: Creighton is now 1-8 to open the season...It is the team's worst start since 2003 under then head coach Jack Dahm, when the team also started 1-8...That year the team finished 20-37...Reliever Bob Lackovic had his best outing of the year Friday, as he went 2.0 innings without allowing a run...His 2.0 innings is the longest outing for him since April 20, 2008 against Northern Iowa when he also threw 2.0 innings...The two teams combined for just three runners left on base, the lowest total of the season...Creighton left two men on, while Stony Brook left just one on.
