OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team tied a school record set in 1994 by winning 10 consecutive matches, defeating CSU Bakersfield 3-0 at home Saturday. Creighton has not lost a match since September 3, when they lost 1-0 to Iowa State. The Jays improve to 12-2-2 overall and 4-0-0 in The Valley. Andrea Zuniga led the charge Creighton scoring one goal and dishing off two assists while Katie Jo Swanson played all 90 minutes in goal earning her third shutout of the season.
"I am excited about the way we played today," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We got after it and had quality performances from everyone. We also accomplished everything we wanted to today - we won on senior day, we were able to play a lot of people and we got better. Plus we played well enough defensively to get another shutout."
Creighton had two impressive scoring combinations in the first half. The first came in the 22nd minute, when Zuniga sent a corner kick sailing into the middle of the field, connecting with Rachelle Holt who headed it into the top right corner of the goal. The goal is the second of the season for Holt.
Zuniga got another assist on a text-book give and go with Gunther. After moving the ball up the center of the field, Gunther passed the ball out to her left side to Zuniga who then one-touched the ball right back. Gunther buried the ball in the back of the net from five yards out for her sixth goal of the season. Zuniga's two assists now give her a team leading seven.
Creighton outshot the Roadrunners eight to five in the first half half, including putting five shots on goal. Creighton also took seven corner kicks in the first half against the three for CSU Bakersfield. Swanson recorded three saves and didn't allow a goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
Zuniga continued her great day by scoring the first goal of the second half in the 59th minute of play. Swanson blasted a punt past half field that Lauren Cingoranelli ran onto, and then crossed a ball into the middle. Zuniga pushed the ball into the lower right corner of the net, threading it inside the right post.
"We will be better coming out of this match," said Erickson. "We now go into Friday [at Missouri State] healthy and ready to win a championship. We are very excited."
Creighton finished the match with 16 shots and 10 on goal, while the Roadrunners took nine shots and four on goal. Swanson had four saves and did not allow a goal through 90 minutes of play. The Jays finished with nine corner kicks against the four of CSU Bakersfield.
The Jays travel to Springfield, Mo., on Friday, October 22 to take on the Bears on Missouri State. A Bluejay victory would give Creighton the MVC regular season championship, as well as the top seed in the Valley Tournament.
