Women's Soccer Comes Up Short at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Creighton women's soccer team put an unbeaten streak of 11, a winning streak of 10 and an MVC regular season title on the line Friday at Missouri State, but could not leave the state of Missouri with a victory. Creighton was outshot 14-7 on the night, falling 2-1 to the Bears in overtime. The loss drops Creighton to 12-3-2 overall and 4-1-0 in The Valley, while the Bears move to 6-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in The Valley.
The Jays scored first in the match for the 10th time this season, when Andrea Zuniga put a ball in the back of the net from 10 yards out. Macy Mauer had sent a ball up and over the back defensive line of the Bears that Zuniga was able to run onto, beating her defenders to score the goal in the 16th minute of play.
Creighton looked like they would be going into the half up 1-0, as the two teams played scoreless soccer for the next 29 minutes. But Missouri State got onto the board when Sarah Linsin shot a ball from 25 yards out to the lower right corner, just out of Montgomery's diving reach. It is the fourth time the Jays have gone into the halftime huddle tied this season, coming out 2-0-1 in the previous three.
Statistically the first half was pretty equal. Each team took four shots in the half, with Missouri State recording three on goal and the Jays limited to just one. Alicia Montgomery recorded two saves in the first period, while Jessica Teahan allowed one goal with no saves through the half. Creighton did record the only corner of the half, but was unable to convert it into another goal.
Creighton played most of the second half down a player, as Mauer was flagged for her second yellow card of the night in the 61st minute of play. The two teams played scoreless soccer through the remainder of the first half, with Missouri State outshooting the Jays in the half eight to four. The Bears also had five corner kicks in the half to Creighton's two.
The Bears would score the golden goal of the match just four minutes into the extra period. Jordan Reppell had a free kick from 45 yards out that Michelle Sommer headed into the lower right corner of the net. It was one of only two shots in the overtime period.
Creighton ended the match with seven shots and just one shot on goal, while Missouri State took 14 shots and 10 on goal. Montgomery finished the match with eight saves, allowing two goals in 94 minutes of play.
The Jays will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 28 when they welcome the Redbirds of Illinois State to Morrison Stadium. The match will once again hold many different implications for Creighton. If the Jays win they will earn an outright MVC regular season title. A tie, along with a Missouri State win, will give the two schools co-championship titles.
