OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton scored the first 13 points of the game and never looked back, posting a 60-49 women's basketball win over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon in the 2010-11 home-opener at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Creighton evened its record to 2-2 on the season, while Wyoming tasted defeat for the first time to fall to 2-1.
Creighton bolted to a 13-0 lead out of the gates, as Wyoming missed its first six shots in the opening six minutes. After early scores by Kellie Nelson and Kelsey Woodard, Carli Tritz hit a free throw and lay-up to make it 7-0. Woodard then buried back-to-back three-pointers just 38 seconds apart to give Creighton a 13-0 edge and prompt UW coach Joe Legerski to call a timeout.
Wyoming fought back to get within 17-9 before another extended scoring drought. Creighton went on a 9-0 run over the next 5:49, including seven points from Tritz, to build a 26-9 lead.
The hosts would take a 28-14 lead into the intermission behind 10 points each from Woodard and Tritz. Hillary Carlson led UW with six points and nine rebounds at the break despite two early fouls. CU dished 10 assists on 12 field goals in the opening half while turning the ball over just three times. UW, on the other hand, had two assists on six buckets and 11 turnovers for the half.
Creighton's lead reached 20 for the first time on a Kellie Nelson score inside, giving CU a 45-25 lead with 8:40 left in the game. The largest lead of the game for the home team was 54-30.
Wyoming put together a 13-0 run late to get within 56-46 with 30 seconds left, but it was too little, too late, for the guests. Woodard drained two foul shots to push CU's lead to 12 with 25 seconds left, only to have Wyoming respond with a three-point play by Bec Campigli. Creighton's Sam Schuett iced the game with two free throws with 16.1 seconds left for the final margin.
Woodard had 14 points to lead Creighton, while Tritz finished with 10 points. Creighton shot 36.9 percent for the game and hit 7-of-10 free throws. Sarah Nelson had eight rebounds to lead Creighton in her home debut, while Tritz topped the club with three steals.
Aubrey Vandiver had 11 points, with nine of those coming in the second half. Carlson had a game-best 10 rebounds and four blocks while also tallying eight points. UW shot 39.1 percent, but were outscored 18-8 off turnovers, 32-20 in the paint and 16-4 on second chance opportunities.
Creighton returns to the floor on Sunday, Nov. 28, with a 2:05 pm game against Marquette.
