DES MOINES, Iowa - Megan Neuvirth had 19 points, six rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists to lead the Creighton women's basketball team to a 77-57 win over Drake at the Knapp Center Friday night. Ally Jensen, from nearby Ames, scored a career-high 13 points, as the Bluejays shot 9-of-22 from three-point range in their 20-point road win. The victory gives Creighton its first sweep of Drake since the 2002-03 season and moves the Jays to 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference, dropping the Bulldogs to 13-13 on the season and 6-10 in Valley play.
Creighton opened the game on a 15-6 run and never trailed in topping their most-played rival in school history. The Bulldogs put together a 10-2 run to get the score to 17-16 in favor of the Bluejays with 9:16 to play in the first half, but that was as close as Drake would get in suffering just its third home loss of the season. Creighton scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 15-point lead after Neuvirth's offensive rebound and putback just seconds before the buzzer put the Jays up 40-25.
After missing their first five three-point attempts in the game, the Bluejays made 5-of-8 from beyond the arc to close the half, with Jensen and Sam Schuett each hitting 2-of-3 from long range before halftime.
The Bluejays maintained their double-figure lead in the second half, scoring the first five points after the break to push to a 45-25 lead. Drake answered with an 11-2 burst to draw within 11 with 13:14 to play, but would get no closer as Creighton posted its largest lead of the game, up 61-40 with 8:55 left in the game.
Creighton shot 46 percent (29-63) from the field and hit 9-of-22 three pointers (.409) in the road win. The Jays also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 40-34, with 18 of their boards coming on the offensive end.
Neuvirth scored 12 of her game-high 19 in the first half. She also topped the team with six rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocked shots. Schuett finished with 16 points and tied Neuvirth with three assists and three blocked shots.
Kellie Nelson chipped in 11 points and six boards, while Kelsey Crites made her first start of the season and also secured six rebounds to tie for team-high honors. Jensen, with roughly 200 friends and family in the crowd, finished 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range to help her career-high 13 point night.
Kayla Person scored 13 points to tie Monique' Jones for the Drake scoring lead. Jones also led all players with seven boards and five steals. Kristin Turk added 10 for DU, while the Bulldogs' leading scorer on the season, Jordann Plummer, was limited to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting.
Creighton, back in sole possession of second place in the MVC, hosts regular-season champion Illinois State on Thursday night at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha. The game will tip off at 7:05 p.m.
