
Bluejays Chop Ladyjacks, 76-65, in WNIT First Round

OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton shot past Stephen F. Austin for a 76-65 win in the Women's National Invitation Tournament Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. Sam Schuett led four Bluejays in double figures with 16 points, as all 10 Bluejays scored in the 11-point win. The victory moves Creighton (21-10) into the second round of the WNIT for the third straight season, where, for the second straight year, they will travel to Kansas for a Sunday afternoon contest.
Creighton jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes of play, making its first four shots, including a pair of three-pointers from Kelsey Woodard and Chevelle Herring. The Jays pushed ahead by as many as 11 in the first half, leading 35-24 with 3:47 to play in the opening stanza.
Stephen F. Austin (18-11), a team which entered the game ranked seventh in the nation in scoring average (78.8), rattled off a 14-0 run to close the first half, taking a 38-35 lead into the locker room. The Ladyjacks hit 6-of-13 (.462) three-pointers in the first half to claim their largest lead of the game at the break.
The Bluejays scored the first four points of the second half and never trailed again. CU put together a 13-4 burst to move to a 61-51 lead with 8:38 left in the game. The Jays' largest lead of the game, cam when they were up 72-57 with 3:24 left after a pair of Ally Jensen free-throws.
SFA shot just 29.4 percent in the second half, while missing all eight of its three-point attempts in the second half. After the Bluejays were out-rebounded 22-21 in the first half, the Jays owned the glass 26-19 after halftime to claim a 47-41 advantage on the boards for the game.
The Bluejays made 9-of-26 (.346) three-pointers and improved to 13-0 on the season when shooting at least 40 percent from the field, finishing 26-of-61 (.426).
Schuett went 7-for-12 from the floor for her 16 points, adding seven boards and a pair of steals for the Jays. Jensen added 13 points off the bench, hitting 3-of-7 three-pointers. Herring hipped in 11 points and Kellie Nelson had 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Megan Neuvirth grabbed six rebounds for the Bluejays to tie Pam Gradoville's school record with 924 career boards.
Tammara Marion led all players with 24 points for SFA, while Schera Sampson added nine points, 10 boards and five blocked shots for the Ladyjacks.
Creighton has now won a postseason WNIT game in three straight seasons, but will look to avoid exiting the tournament in the second round for the third consecutive year when it plays at Kansas on Sunday.
KU, which ended CU's season last year in the WNIT, is 16-15 on the season. The Bluejays and Jayhawks will tip off at 1:05 p.m., in Lawrence on Sunday.
