OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton offense was held to a season low four hits Saturday afternoon, as Illinois State used 6.2 shutout innings from Brad Sorkin to clinch the series with a 5-2 win at the CU Sports Complex.
Sorkin struck out seven for the Redbirds (14-14, 4-1 MVC), including a four-strikeout seventh inning. Five different Redbirds had multiple hits and one RBI, as Jake Thornton led the way with a 3-for-5 day.
Brandon Koenigstein took the first loss of his career,
giving up all five Redbird runs. Kurt Spomer was the lone bright spot for the
Jays (14-11, 3-5 MVC), as he pitched three scoreless innings in the longest
outing of his career.
The Redbirds jumped ahead of Creighton right away, as Kevin Tokarski doubled to
start the game, and was later brought home by Thornton with a single.
The scoring continued in the fourth, as a sacrifice fly from Zach Amrein and a Chad Hinshaw RBI single gave Illinois State all the runs they would need, with a 3-0 lead.
The Redbirds capped their scoring with two-out, RBI singles from Matt Mirabal and Anthony Ruffolo in the sixth.
The lone offensive bright spot for CU came from Joey Bowens, as the sophomore laced a two-out triple in the ninth inning for his first career RBIs and extra-base hit.
Trever Adams also added two hits, with a 2-for-4 day.
Creighton and the Redbirds will wrap up their series tomorrow at the CU Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
