OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton softball head coach Brent Vigness has resigned his post to take the same position at Wisconsin, it was announced on Thursday. Vigness recently concluded his 17th season at Creighton, where he logged a 553-375-2 record. Creighton Athletics director Bruce Rasmussen has stated a nationwide search is already underway to find Vigness' successor.
Vigness was just the second head coach in the 34-year history of Bluejay softball, with Creighton Hall of Famer Mary Higgins leading the squad for the first 17 years. The three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year ends his highly successful 17-year run in Omaha just 11 wins shy of Higgins' school-record 564. Under the guidance of Vigness, the Bluejays won six MVC regular-season championships, six Valley tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times.
Creighton ended its 2010 season with a 37-23 mark after appearing in its sixth NCAA Tournament in the last eight years by capturing its fifth MVC Tournament title in the past eight seasons. The Bluejays must replace six senior starters lost from the 2010 team, including record-setting All-Americans Tara Oltman at pitcher and Renae Sinkler at first base.
