CHICAGO, Ill. - The Creighton men's soccer team provided head coach Jamie Clark with a 2-0 win over Loyola Chicago in his Bluejay coaching debut Wednesday night at Loyola Soccer Park. Second-half goals from Kris Clark and Jose Gomez coupled with Creighton's always-stellar defense were the difference in the season-opening road shutout. The Bluejays are now undefeated in their last 18 regular-season road matches dating back to 2006.
Clark scored the first goal of the match in the 62nd minute, as the Bluejays finally took advantage of the pressure they had been applying to the Ramblers throughout the match. The Jays out-worked Loyola in the corner, with Dion Acoff winning the ball and sending a cross through the box to the far post where Clark was able to touch the ball just inside the post for his second career game-winning goal and first since 2008.
Just seven minutes later, newcomer Gomez took advantage of a Loyola miscue to put the Bluejays up 2-0. Several Creighton players aggressively made runs at Loyola goalkeeper Peter McKeown as he tried to distribute the ball to teammates, and Gomez finally made it pay off when he took the ball from McKeown near the top of the box and chipped it over the keeper and one defender for a goal in his Bluejay debut. The sophomore transfer, who assisted three of CU's four preseason goals, had one goal as a freshman at Cal State Fullerton.
"I thought it was a nice start for the team," said Coach Clark after his first Bluejay victory. "Hopefully we are able to build a little momentum from this, which is something we are trying to do each day. After a tough first half, we were able to open things up in the second half. You have to fight through 45 minutes sometimes and we did just that to earn a road win."
In what has become a staple of Bluejay soccer, the defense was stifling, allowing only two shots in the shutout, with neither of the shots finding their way on goal. Junior goalkeeper Brian Holt was the beneficiary of CU's outstanding defense, posting his 21st career shutout in 36 career starts.
Creighton is now 11-0-7 in its last 18 regular-season road matches, dating back to the 2006 season.
The Bluejays open their home portion of the 2010 schedule when they play host to UNC Greensboro at Morrison Stadium on Saturday night. Kick off in Omaha is set for 7 p.m. against the Spartans.
