Sycamore Tip-In Beats The Buzzer, As Men's Basketball Falls 61-59

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Carl Richard's tip-in as time expired lifted Indiana State to a 61-59 win over Creighton on Sunday. The game featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes, but Indiana State scored the final four points in the last minute to seal its 12th straight home win in front of 6,080 fans at Hulman Center.
Indiana State improved to 11-7 (6-1 MVC), while Creighton fell to 12-7 (4-3 MVC).
The first half included nine ties and three lead changes before a late 8-0 run by the Jays gave them some headway. A Doug McDermott three-ball, an Antoine Young lay-up and a Jahenns Manigat corner trey gave Creighton its lead. At the break, McDermott led CU with nine points, while Young had seven points and five assists. Creighton shot 50 percent from the field at half while limiting ISU's vaunted perimeter attack to 31.3 percent shooting, including 1-of-7 from three-point territory.
Indiana State scored 11 points in the opening 2:17 of the second half, as Aaron Carter, Steve McWhorter and Jake Odum all drained three-pointers to put the 'Trees ahead 35-32 at the 17:43 mark.
The Jays ended the Sycamore run with one of their own. A McDermott putback, a Darryl Ashford three-pointer, an Antoine Young lay-up, Kenny Lawson Jr. lay-up and Wayne Runnels three-pointer consisted of Creighton's 12-0 flurry that saw the Jays retake a 46-38 lead with 13:15 remaining.
Indiana State answered with a 10-0 run of their own that featured two jumpers by Richard, and triples by McWhorter and Carter. That gave ISU a 48-46 lead, but CU ended that with a jump hook by McDermott.
ISU continued to fire away, getting three straight three-pointers by Aaron Carter to go ahead 51-48, but the Jays countered with three-pointers by Kaleb Korver, Ashford and McDermott to take a 57-54 lead into the final four minutes. Carter sank another trey, his sixth, to tie it at 57. McDermott would sink a pair of foul shots to give CU a two-point edge, and Carter missed a jumper on the other end, with Echenique clearing the board for CU possession.
Creighton came up empty on its end, and ISU milked the shot clock before Odum's leaner banked in with 47.9 seconds left. Following a timeout, McDermott missed an open three-pointer from the right wing, and ISU snared the rebound. After clearing halfcourt ISU called timeout with 17.4 seconds left and the shot clock off.
ISU used its last timeout with 4.3 left. Odum would miss, but Richard tipped in the ball as time expired for the winner. Officials went to the monitors, which confirmed the shot was in time.
McDermott led Creighton with 18 points and eight rebounds, the only Bluejay in double-figures. Young had nine points and a career-high nine assists, while Echenique had nine points, six rebounds and five blocked shots while dominating the paint for much of the afternoon. Creighton shot 45.8 percent for the game, includnig 37.5 percent from downtown and 75 percent at the line. Creighton's 15 turnovers matched its season-high.
Indiana State was paced by a career-high 20 points from Carter, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. McWhorter and Richard each had 11 points for the hosts. Indiana State shot 36.9 percent for the afternoon, and 47.6 percent overall from three-point territory. ISU made 9-of-14 from three-point range after intermission.
Creighton returns home to host Bradley on Wednesday in a game that tips at 7:05 pm at Qwest Center Omaha.
NOTES: Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing is in his first year after serving as an assistant to former Creighton player and assistant coach Kevin McKenna in recent seasons. McKenna now works for former Bluejay head coach Dana Altman at Oregon ... Doug McDermott had eight or more rebounds for the sixth straight game, finishing with eight ...
