PEORIA, Ill. - The sixth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team avoided the first 0-2 Missouri Valley Conference start in school history by notching a 1-0 win over Bradley on a cold, wet Wednesday night at Shea Stadium. Andrew Ribeiro's first-half goal proved enough as the Bluejays dominated the Braves for their 10th shutout in 14 matches this year.
The victory moves the Bluejays to 12-2-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in MVC play. Creighton, which had dropped its MVC opener at Missouri State last Wednesday, has never started Valley play with consecutive losses. The Braves, ranked 28th by College Soccer News, fall to 9-4-2 on the year and 1-2-0 in conference play.
It took some time for Creighton to get its offense going, as the Braves were outshooting the Bluejays 5-2 through the first 27 minutes of the match. From there, the Bluejays asserted themselves and carried the majority of the possession for the remainder of the match.
Ribeiro got the Bluejays on the board in the 35th minute, as he took a feed from Jose Gomez and sent a blast past Bradley goalkeeper Brian Billings for what proved to be the only goal of the night. The goal was Ribeiro's third of the season, all of which have been game-winners. The win was CU's sixth 1-0 victory of the year.
Creighton continued to attack for the final 10 minutes of the half, taking the final nine shots of the period. That aggressiveness continued in the second half, as the Bluejays unloaded four shots in the first five minutes after the half to record 13 straight shots over that span.
"I felt like we were in control of the game the entire night," said head coach Elmar Bolowich after the win. "We had tons of opportunities to go up higher, but whether it was a spirited defensive effort from Bradley or us taking the wrong shot, we just couldn't add to it. They are a good team and it was a good, tight, typical type of conference contest."
Bradley's best scoring chance didn't come until the 85th minute, when BU's leading scorer Brian Gaul was able to get a close-range shot attempt off, only to be turned away by Bluejay keeper Brian Holt. Holt again snuffed out another potential chance by BU in the final 90 seconds, coming to the top of the box to collect a lead pass intended for Gaul.
Holt made two saves in his ninth solo shutout and 10th team shutout of the season. The senior goalkeeper extended his own CU and MVC record with his 36th career clean sheet.
Creighton would finish with a season-high 24 shots on the night, outshooting the Braves 24-11, including 13-6 after halftime. The Bluejays also tied their season-high with eight corner kicks, while snapping a two-game skid in the series with Bradley.
The Bluejays, on Fall Break, will now stay in Illinois until their Saturday night match at SIU Edwardsville (7-5-3, 1-2-1 MVC).
