OMAHA, Neb. - Senior goalkeeper Brian Holt of the Creighton men's soccer
team has been named the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in Division
I, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). Holt leads the Academic All-America First-Team, while his
teammates and fellow seniors Ethan Finlay and Jace Peters were honored on the
Academic All-America Second-Team.
In addition to earning the top Academic All-America honor among Division I
men's soccer players, Holt becomes the first Creighton men's soccer player to
be named a First-Team Academic All-American.
A finance major with a 3.73 grade point average, Holt is scheduled to
graduate with degrees in both finance and entrepreneurship this month. The MVC Goalkeeper of the Year currently
leads the NCAA with a 0.23 goals against average and 91.5 save percentage.
Holt tied the NCAA record for career shutouts in Creighton's 3-0 win over
Northern Illinois in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 20. His 42 career clean sheets are also the
school and league-record, as are his 56 wins and 0.63 career goals against average. A finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award,
the Omaha native is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete First-Teamer.
Finlay, who was also a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, carries a
3.41 cumulative GPA in finance. The
senior forward ranks among NCAA leaders and leads the MVC with 13 goals and 32
points this season. The two-time MVC
Player of the Year and three-time MVC First-Teamer is the Valley's active
leader with 42 goals, 17 assists and 101 points, while his career goal and
point totals rank in the MVC and CU career top-10.
Peters, a senior defender, has been a key part of Creighton's record-setting
defense this season. The Glenwood, Iowa
native, has a 3.61 GPA in biology. He
has started 14 of Creighton's 22 matches this season, helping the Bluejays lead
the NCAA with 0.22 goals against average, 91.9 save percentage and 77.3 shutout
percentage. The Jays have allowed only
five goals all season, with Peters helping the Bluejays to a school and MVC
record 17 shutouts this year.
Prior to this season, the Bluejays owned just two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans
in men's soccer. Shane Havens (2003) and
Matt Wieland (2005) were each third-team Academic All-Americans for the
Bluejays before this season's trio garnered the awards from CoSIDA.
The No. 2-seeded Bluejays (20-2-0) will face the No. 7-seeded South Florida Bulls
(13-3-4) this Saturday in the NCAA Quarterinals. Kickoff at Creighton's Morrison Stadium is
set for 1 pm, with the winner advancing to the 2011 College Cup.
