LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Creighton women's basketball knocked off Wyoming 66-50 at Arena
Auditorium Thursday night. The Bluejays were led by Sarah Nelson's 21
points and eight rebounds, while freshman Taylor Johnson hit four
three-pointers for the second straight game and sophomore McKenzie Fujan
added a career-high 11 points in the win.
Creighton (4-2) opened the game on a 9-0 run as Wyoming missed its first five shots in the game, a similar start to last year's game against the Cowgirls in Omaha, when the Bluejays started on a 13-0 run and never looked back. The Bluejays pushed to a 17-4 lead after Fujan knocked down a three-pointer, capping a streak of eight straight points from the sophomore guard alone.
The Bluejays continued their hot-shooting throughout the first half, building to a 29-11 lead with just under five minutes to play when DaNae Moore knocked down an 18-footer.
Wyoming (1-5) cut back into the Creighton lead before the end of the half, as a quick 11-0 run made the score 29-22 with 90 seconds left in the half. Johnson knocked down her second three-pointer of the game with 45 seconds left to halt the Wyoming run and make the halftime score 32-22.
That Johnson three-pointer didn't stop all of Wyoming's momentum however, as the Cowgirls posted a 10-0 burst to start the second half to finish off a 21-3 run, tying the game at 32. The home team never took the lead however, as the Bluejays responded with six straight points from Nelson to reclaim the lead for good.
The Cowgirls would get within two points, but Nelson again answered with four consecutive points to help give the Jays distance and Wyoming would never get within five points for the remainder of the game.
Nelson scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and finished with eight rebounds. The sophomore forward, who entered the night ranked seventh in the NCAA in field goal percentage, made 8-of-13 shots from the field and all four of her free-throw attempts.
Johnson made 4-of-7 three-pointers for 12 points in the win, giving the rookie eight three-pointers in the last two games. Fujan finished with 11 points, making 4-of-5 shots from the floor. Carli Tritz tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds, while she also finished with eight points and team-leading four assists.
Creighton shot 23-of-55 (.418) in the win, including 8-of-18 (.444) from long range and 12-of-13 (.923) at the free-throw line. The Jays outrebounded Wyoming 40-39.
Wyoming was led by Alison Gorrell's 12 points off the bench, while Ashley Sickles added 11 points and Kayla Woodward finished with 10. Chaundra Sewell led all players with 11 rebounds. The Cowgirls made just 1-of-18 three-pointers for a lowly 5.6 percent from long range.
The Bluejays return home for a Sunday afternoon tilt with No. 3-ranked Notre Dame. The Jays welcome the Fighting Irish to Omaha for the first time, with a 1:35 pm tip at D.J. Sokol Arena.
