
Women's Basketball Falls 76-48 to No. 3 Notre Dame

OMAHA, Neb. – A strong opening half by No. 3 Notre Dame proved to be the difference as the Fighting Irish defeated the Creighton women's basketball team 76-48 Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Irish led by 30 at halftime, holding the Bluejays to only three first-half field goals in the win.
Notre Dame improved to 7-1 with the victory in its first game ever played in the state of Nebraska. The Bluejays dropped to 4-3 on the season, losing two non-conference games in a season at D.J. Sokol Arena for the first time.
Creighton's first point of the game came with 12:51 left in the first half, when Carli Tritz's free-throw snapped a 12-0 Notre Dame run to start the game. Sarah Nelson then connected on CU's first basket of the game with 11:38 left to make the score 17-3 in favor of the Irish. The Bluejays missed their first five shots of the game and committed eight turnovers before Nelson's basket.
It was 30-3 before freshman Sammy Jensen canned CU's second field goal of the game with just over five minutes left in the first half. The three-pointer was Jensen's first career attempt.
The Irish carried a 41-11 lead into the break carried by some hot-shooting and 16 Bluejay turnovers. Natalie Novosel had 11 points and Natalie Achonwa chipped in 10 for the Irish in the first half, as Notre Dame shot 17-of-28 (.607) in the first half, outscoring the Jays 18-2 on turnovers. CU made just 3-of-20 shots in the first half.
Creighton outscored the Irish in the second half, 37-35, shooting better than 56 percent from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range. Ally Jensen led the way for the Bluejays, scoring a team-high 12 points and making 3-of-5 three-pointers. DaNae Moore led the Bluejays with eight rebounds, while Sarah Nelson's streak of six straight games scoring in double figures came to an end, as she finished with seven points.
Achonwa led all players with a career-high 20 points off the bench, making 8-of-11 shots from the field in just 18 minutes of play. Novosel added 17 points, Devereaux Peters had 10 points and led all players with nine rebounds and All-American Skylar Diggins finished with a game-high eight assists.
Creighton will look to bounce back when it plays at Nebraska on Thursday night. The Bluejays and Huskers will tip at 7 pm in the Devaney Center. The game will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network and can be heard live on KOIL AM 1180.
