SAN ANTONIO - Colorado's Lexy Kresl hit a three-pointer as time expired to help the Buffaloes stay perfect and defeat the Creighton women's basketball team 52-49 in the championship game of the UTSA Holiday Classic Wednesday night at the Convocation Center on UTSA's campus. Carli Tritz had just tied the game with a three-pointer and only 15.8 seconds left, but Colorado improved to 11-0 with the buzzer-beating victory.
Tritz scored a game-high 18 points and led the Jays with five assists and was honored on the all-tournament team for her 16 point average at the event.
Creighton, which led by as many as seven points in the first half, was down six with 4:50 to play, but a three-pointer from Jasmin Corbin made the score 47-44 in favor of Colorado with 3:52 to play. After a Tritz lay-up made the score 47-46, the Buffaloes got a tough inside bucket from freshman Jen Reese to extend their lead back to three with just under two minutes to play.
Tritz missed a lay-up with 1:28 left, but a steal by Sarah Nelson with 46 seconds left gave the Bluejays the ball and a chance to tied the score. And CU did just that, following a timeout called by head coach Jim Flanery, the Jays got the clutch shot they needed when Tritz drained a three-pointer with 15.8 seconds left on the clock.
Colorado didn't call a timeout for its final possession, as the Buffs found an open look from Kresl and the rookie drained a triple to give Colorado its 11th straight win to start the season.
Tritz finished 6-of-13 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three-point range and was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line for her game-high 18 points. She also led the team with five assists and added a steal and blocked shot to earn all-tournament honors. The rest of Creighton's starters were a combined 5-for-25 from the field, including an 0-for-8 night from Ally Jensen one night after the junior had scored a season-high 17 points.
Reese equalled Kresl's 15 points, while Reese led all players with eight rebounds. The Jays held Colorado's leading scorer, Chucky Jeffery, five points below her scoring average, as the junior guard finished with 13 points and eight turnovers.
The Bluejays shot 35.4 percent in the game (17-48) and 35.3 percent (6-17) from long range, while they were a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Creighton logged 13 steals, while forcing 20 turnovers from the Buffaloes.
Creighton will take a 6-5 non-conference record into Valley play when league action starts on New Years Eve day. For the second straight year, the Bluejays will host Drake on Dec. 31, as the Bulldogs and Bluejays open Valley play at 2 pm on New Years Eve.
