
Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Fly by Bluejays, 8-2, in Softball

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Creighton softball team suffered its seventh straight loss, dropping an 8-2 decision to Florida Gulf Coast in its first game at the Diamond Devil Invitational hosted by Arizona State. The Bluejays allowed four runs in the bottom of the second inning and couldn't fight back in the defeat.
The Eagles (10-13) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and led 6-1 after three innings. A three-run home run from Lindsey Green in the second inning chased Bluejay started Kylie Hovinga. Reliever Brittany Telecky allowed a run before the she could record three outs and the Jays were down 4-0 after two.
In the top of the third inning, Creighton scored when MaKenzie Michael came off the bench to replace starting catcher Amy Baker, and promptly delivered an RBI single up the middle. Michael's first career RBI scored Malloree Grove from second base.
FGCU added two more runs on three hits in the third inning.
The score remained 6-1 until Christa Ruf unloaded her team-leading fourth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning.
The Eagles would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning for an 8-2 final.
Hovinga (2-2) took the loss for the Jays, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in one-plus innings of work. Telecky pitched two full innings, allowing four hits and three runs, walking three and striking out two. Sammy Snygg pitched the final three innings for the Jays, allowing two runs on two hits.
Creighton will look to snap its losing streak when it plays a pair of games on Friday at Farrington Stadium, starting with a 2 pm (CST) contest against Weber State. The Jays then face Campbell in a scheduled 6:30 pm (CST) first pitch.
