
Softball's Amy Baker Named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Sophomore Amy Baker of the Creighton softball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. The Bluejay catcher hit five home runs in Creighton's two games last Friday, tying the school record with three home runs against Campbell. In six games last week, all six of Baker's hits were home runs.
On Friday, she started her home run binge with a three-run blast against Weber State in the fifth inning and followed with a solo shot in the sixth inning of Creighton's 7-2 win over the Wildcats in t he Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
She stayed in the zone in Creighton's second game of the day, hitting home runs in her first two at bats against Campbell. She smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and again hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Baker, an Omaha Westside product, was then walked in her third plate appearance, before tying Michelle Graner's school record with her third home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
On Saturday she was retired in the first inning, but smacked another two-run home run during Creighton's six-run second inning during its 8-0 win over Howard.
Her six home runs came in the span of eight plate appearances and moved her season total to a league-leading seven on the season.
For the week she was 6-for-16 (.375) with six home runs, six runs scored and 11 RBI. She had 24 total bases and slugged 1.500 for the week. The sophomore, now in her first year as a collegiate catcher, was also flawless in 40 chances in the field, throwing out two runners attempting to steal.
With less than a year and half of her career in the books, she already ranks eighth in school history with 22 career home runs. The Player of the Week honor is the third of her career, as she won in back-to-back weeks last April 12th and 19th.
Baker and the Bluejays (9-12) open MVC play this weekend when they travel to Evansville for a three-game series which begins with a noon Saturday doubleheader.
