NASSAU, Bahamas -- Doug McDermott and Will Artino combined for 42 points and 33 rebounds, and Derek Sebastian had a putback to beat the halftime buzzer that gave Creighton the lead for good in a 94-82 victory over the Commonwealth Giants on Saturday.
The victory improved Creighton to 2-0 on their four-game exhibition tour of the Bahamas.
McDermott, the 2010 MVC Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, had 29 points and 18 rebounds in 26 minutes, while redshirt freshman Artino had 13 points and 15 rebounds in 24 minutes. Sebastian, a senior who has scored three career points in regular-season play as a Bluejay, added nine points and five rebounds in eight minutes while spelling a foul-plagued McDermott.
Creighton led 19-18 after one quarter, then maintained that lead to go ahead 45-44 at intermission. Sebastian led all Jays with seven points and four rebounds in the second quarter making all three of his field goal attempts and converting a three-point play.
The third quarter made their move in the third quarter, outscoring the two-time defending NPBA champions 25-11 to build a 70-55 cushion heading to the final 10 minutes. In the third quarter alone, McDermott had nine points and eight rebounds in seven minutes of action, part of a rebounding effort that saw CU win the boards 23-9 in the quarter and 64-33 for the afternoon.
Creighton's lead remained in double-figures the entire fourth quarter.
In addition to the double-doubles by McDermott and Artino, Josh Jones hit 5-of-6 shots to finish with 10 points. Austin Chatman dished nine of Creighton's 30 assists on the day, while fellow freshman Geoffrey Groselle had seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Creighton is off Sunday before returning the court Monday at 7 pm Eastern against the Mailbot Cybots.
