OMAHA, Neb. - Seniors Ethan Finlay and Kris Clark combined to score the only goal in Sunday's Blue-White Scrimmage of the 10th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team. Clark knocked in a feed from Finlay in the 30th minute and the Blue Team topped the White Team 1-0 on a perfect afternoon for soccer at Morrison Stadium.
The Blue Team, which consisted of returners and only three newcomers, dominated the contest against the White Team, which was made up entirely of first-year Bluejays. Blue came out of the gates attacking, testing true freshman goalkeeper Jeff Gal in net. The rookie stood his ground against the talented group of returning players, which featured five all-Missouri Valley Conference players on the pitch.
Gal made five saves in the first 28 minutes of the match, including several diving stops to keep Blue off the board. Finally in the 30th minute, Finlay was able to get around his defender and send a low crossing pass across the box, where Clark was redirected the ball into the back of the net from close range. Clark ranked third on the team in goals and assists last year, while Finlay - the 2010 MVC Player of the Year - ranked in the NCAA Top-10 in goals and points scored in 2010.
Before the 40-minute first half concluded, Gal made two more saves to keep his side in the match, finishing his Bluejay debut with an impressive seven saves.
Blue registered 11 shots in the first half, with eight finding their way on goal. The Blue Team added eight more shots in the second half, with only two going on goal. Redshirt freshman Alex Bolowich turned away both shots he faced for the White Team in the second half.
Fifth-year senior Bryan Hoie and redshirt freshman Taylor Reeves split time in net for Blue, with neither recording a save in the shutout.
White managed only one shot in the loss, when JT Seger put an attempt high over the crossbar in the 70th minute. Blue outshot White 19-1 in the scrimmage, which was taking place on just the fifth day of fall practice.
In addition to his assist, Finlay put a shot off the crossbar and one off the post in the first half, as he led all players with five shots attempted. All four of Clark's shots were put on goal for the Blue side.
The 10th-ranked Bluejays will turn their attention to outside competition now, as they prepare to play against the reigning NCAA Champion Akron Zips in their exhibition opener on Saturday. Akron, who defeated Creighton 1-0 in the regular-season last year, and the Jays will play at a neutral site in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday night at the ShinDigz National Soccer Festival.
