No. 10 Men's Soccer Blanks Denver 1-0 in Opener

DENVER - Freshman Guido Peña scored in the 65th minute off a feed from senior All-American Ethan Finlay, and senior goalkeeper Brian Holt stood tall in net as he set a Missouri Valley Conference record by recording his 28th career shutout to help the 10th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team defeat Denver 1-0 at CIBER Field Saturday night. The win was Creighton's 300th since restarting the program in 1990, against just 92 losses in that span, while it was also the first win in the first match for new Bluejay head coach Elmar Bolowich.
The teams played an even and scoreless opening half in which Denver outshot the Bluejays 4-3, but Creighton had more scoring opportunities. Creighton attacked the Denver goal, earning six corner kicks to just one by the Pioneers in the opening 45 minutes. Andrew Ribeiro notched the only shot on goal by the Bluejays in the first half.
The second half again saw the teams battle up and down the pitch before the Bluejays scored what proved to be the lone goal of the contest. In the 65th minute Finlay, a MAC Hermann Trophy candidate, created enough space for himself to send a crossing pass into the box for Peña. The rookie from Costa Rica found the back of the net, putting the ball just inside the right post for his first collegiate goal.
On the other end, Holt worked hard to earn his record-setting shutout. The senior stopped seven Denver shots, including five in the second half. The seven saves marked the most saves Holt had made in a match since stopping a career-high eight at California as a freshman on Sept. 21, 2008. His 28th shutout adds to his school record while it moved him past Bradley's Chris Dunsheath (27.5) on the MVC charts.
Denver, ranked as high as 19th by Goal.com, dropped to 0-1-0 on the season and 0-3-1 all-time against Creighton. The Bluejays (1-0-0) are now undefeated in their last five season openers (3-0-2).
The Bluejays return to action on Wednesday when they play at UMKC (0-1-0) at 7 pm.
