OMAHA, Neb. -- No. 19 Creighton never trailed en route to winning its eighth straight game with a 75-49 victory over Indiana State on Saturday.
Creighton improved to 18-2 for just the third time in the program's storied history, and will reach the midway point of the Missouri Valley Conference slate with an 8-1 mark. Indiana State, last year's MVC Tournament champion, fell to 11-9 (2-7 MVC).
Creighton broke open a close game with a 10-0 run to go ahead, 29-15 with 7:03 left in the half. The run featured two three-pointers by Bluejay sophomore Jahenns Manigat. Creighton shot 56.0 percent in the half and five different men scored exactly six points, which was capped by Antoine Young's buzzer-beating jumper that made it 42-25 at the break.
The Jays never let their lead slip below 13 points after intermission, and it reached 25 on a pair of free throws from Gregory Echenique to make it 59-34. The cushion helped CU withstand a nearly seven-minute field goal drought that trimmed CU's edge to 62-48 with 2:35 left.
But the Jays held back the Sycamores, closing the game on a 13-1 run that featured last minute three-pointers from Nebraska natives Ross Ferrarini and Matthew Dorwart. It was the first trifecta of the season for both men.
Doug McDermott led a balanced attack with 12 points, while the sophomore forward also added a game-high 11 rebounds for his MVC-leading seventh double-double of the year. Young and Ethan Wragge each had eight points, while five other men had either six or seven points. Creighton shot 43.6 percent for the game (24-55) and made 11-of-24 three-point shots (45.8 percent). The Jays also sank 16-of-19 free-throws (84.2 percent) and outrebounded ISU 39-31.
Indiana State was paced by a game-high 15 points from Dwayne Lathan. Early foul trouble limited ISU star guard Jake Odum to 18 minutes, and he finished with four points, five rebounds and three assists. The Sycamores shot 32.7 percent overall and were only 4-of-16 from downtown.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:05 pm game at Drake.
