Bluejays Blast Panthers, 65-50, in Women's Hoops

OMAHA, Neb. - Four Bluejays scored in double figures as the Creighton women's basketball team cruised to a 65-50 win over Northern Iowa Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. Creighton never trailed in the game regionally televised on Fox Sports, jumping out to a 10-0 lead and never looking back. Ally Jensen led the Bluejays with 14 points and DaNae Moore tied her career-high with 11 points in the win over the reigning Missouri Valley Conference champions.
The win was Creighton's 109th conference victory under head coach Jim Flanery, tying him with Connie Yori for the most league wins in school history and sixth in Valley history. The Bluejays are now 10-9 on the year and 4-4 in Valley action, while the Panthers dropped to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Creighton scored the first 10 points of the game before a jumper from K.K. Armstrong stopped the Bluejay with four minutes already off the clock. Despite going nearly 10 minutes without hitting a field goal, the Bluejays maintained their lead as the Panthers' offense also struggled to get going. When Taylor Johnson burried a three-pointer with 8:38 left in the half, the CU lead moved to 15-6 on the Jays' first field goal since the 18:14 mark.
A 17-4 run over the span of seven minutes midway through the first half gave the Bluejays control of the game, as a bucket from Moore made the score 27-10 in favor of the home team with 5:19 to play in the opening half. Creighton carried a 17-point lead into halftime, its largest halftime lead of the year and UNI's largest halftime deficit of the season.
Creighton maintained its double digit lead throughout the second half, as the Panthers could get no closer than within 12 points. CU used balanced scored in the win, as Jensen was held without a field goal in the second half, after draining 4-of-5 three-pointers in the opening frame. The junior from Ames, Iowa, finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Moore made all three of her field goal attempts in the second half and finished 5-of-6 from the field to equal her career-high with 11 points. Johnson led the Jays with eight points after halftime, finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists while hitting 3-of-6 three-pointers. Sarah Nelson chipped in 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, in addition to five assists and two blocked shots.
Carli Tritz entered the game averaging better than 15 points over her 11-game double-figure scoring streak, but was limited to six points in the win. She managed to lead the team with a season-high six assists as CU had 18 helpers on 20 field goals.
Katelin Oney led UNI with 14 points and Mercedees Morgan scored 11 points, making 3-of-5 threes for the Panthers. Armstrong, UNI's leading scorer entering the game, made only 3-of-14 shots in the loss for seven points in the loss for the Panthers.
The Panthers shot just 30.8 percent from the field and only 60 percent (12-20) at the free-throw line, while CU made 37.7 percent of its shots, 43.8 percent (7-16) from long range and 72 percent (18-25) at the line.
Creighton will look for another home win when it hosts Bradley (11-9, 2-6 MVC) Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
