
Volleyball Earns First Sweep at Drake Since 2003, Improves to 18-3

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Creighton Volleyball team improved to 18-3 by winning its sixth straight match, a 3-0 sweep at Drake on Saturday night. Creighton's first sweep in Des Moines since 2003 came by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-11.
Creighton only trailed once in the first set, rolling to a 25-17 victory. Creighton held a 10-8 lead before Kate Elman served up an 8-0 run that gave the Jays a comfortable margin. Creighton's lead reached as large as 20-9 and 22-11 before it settled for the 25-17 win. Kelli Browning had seven kills on .545 hitting in the opening frame to pace CU.
Creighton won the second set by an identical 25-17 margin, pulling away late for the 2-0 lead in the match. The Jays held a narrow 17-15 lead before kills from Megan Bober and Heather Thorson helped fuel a set-ending 8-2 run. Creighton hit .394 in the set while holding Drake to -.025 hitting.
In the third set, Creighton demolished an unispired Drake team by a 25-11 score. The Bulldogs committed a whopping 17 attack errors in the set, five of which were a result of Creighton's vaunted block.
Browning led the Jays with 12 kills and seven blocks on the night, while Elman had 22 digs for CU. The Jays had 36 kills, three aces, 56 digs and 11 blocks on the night on .252 hitting.
Drake was paced by seven kills each from Cassie Effken and Bentley Mancini, but struggled to get production from its outside hitters. Drake's -.060 hitting effeciency on the night was the fifth-worst ever by a Creighton opponent. Sarah Madden led Drake with 24 digs. DU finished with 24 kills, three aces, 53 digs and five blocks.
Creighton returns home next weekend with a pair of matches. The Jays take on Evansville on Friday at 7 pm and Southern Illinois on Saturday at 4 pm, both at D.J. Sokol Arena.
