
Women's Hoops Beats SIU 80-64

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Creighton shot a season-high 52.8 percent from the field and scored a season-high in an 80-64 victory women's basketball win over Southern Illinois at SIU Arena Saturday afternoon. Sarah Nelson finished with a career-high point total for the second straight game, finishing with 25 points in the 16-point road win.
The Bluejays (13-11, 7-6 MVC) opened the game by scoring the first four points and Nelson scored Creighton's first six points before Jordan Garrison hit a three-pointer to snap a 6-6 tie. The game was tied at 13 before the Bluejays reeled off 10 straight points and would maintain the lead for good. The 10-0 run was capped by a Carli Tritz, giving the Jays a 23-13 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half.
After making just 3-of-10 shots to start the game, the Bluejays finished the first half by making 15-of-30 field goal attempts to own a 37-28 lead on the Salukis (7-17, 3-10 MVC). CU forced 13 first-half turnovers and outscored SIU 17-4 in points off of turnovers in the opening half.
Creighton held on to a double digit lead and went ahead 56-40 before an 11-2 SIU run got the Salukis within seven with 8:31 to play. With the Jays leading 58-51, Jasmin Corbin hit a key pull-up jumper to spark a 6-0 run and the Jays would never surrender their double-digit lead.
The Jays' largest lead of the game was 18 points in the final 30 seconds of the game, before the the visitors cruised to an 80-64 win.
The win was Creighton's ninth straight win in the series with SIU and was the first game this year the Bluejays shot better than 50 percent. CU finished the game 28-of-53 (.528) from the field and made 19-of-26 (.731) free throws.
Nelson, who scored 23 on Thursday at Evansville, scored a career-high for the second straight game, finishing with 25 points. She went 8-for-14 from the field and 9-of-12 at the free throw line, adding six rebounds, two blocks and career-high six assists.
Tritz poured in 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while she tied her career-high with six of Creighton's 12 steals. Garrison added eight points off the bench, making 2-of-3 three-pointers.
Freshman Cartaesha Macklin led SIU with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Alexus Patterson finished with 11 points and Teri Oliver added 13 points for the Salukis.
Creighton will return home for its final two home games of the season this weekend when it plays host to Illinois State on Friday and Indiana State on Sunday. Friday's game against the Redbirds will be Creighton's annual "Pink Out" game and Sunday is Senior Day.
