OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's golf team will host a rare home meet when members from 13 other schools come to Omaha for next week's Creighton Golf Classic.
The meet will take place on Monday and Tuesday (April
16-17) at Oak Hills Country Club (12325 Golfing Green Drive) in Omaha.
Monday's play will begin with 9:30 am tee times off both holes 1 & 10. Tuesday play is
slated to begin at 8:30 am off both nine's.
The meet features two-time defending champion Amy Anderson of North Dakota State, who won the Creighton Classic by six shots in 2010 and by 14 shots last year. Anderson won the US Junior Girls Amateur in 2009 at the age of 17 and owns 13 career victories in 30 college starts. A second-team All-American as a sophomore, she has finished in fourth place or better in all eight meets this season.
Creighton's top golfer this year has been junior Celeste Gassman, who averages a team-low 79.4 strokes per round. Freshman teammates Rachel Thompson (83.0) is second on the roster in scoring average.
Last year at the Creighton Classic, South Dakota State shot a 664 (+88) to beat six other teams, with Northern Iowa taking second at 671 (+95). Host Creighton took fourth with a 683 and was led by then-senior Maggie Kersenbrock's 166 (+22) aggregate, good for a tie for fifth place. Anderson blew away the field with a 14-shot victory, firing a 147 (+3) total.
In 2010 at the Creighton Classic, Northern Iowa fired a 644 (+76) over two rounds to top a seven-team field, with Creighton finishing second at 656 (+88). Anderson won the meet by six strokes with a 149 (+7) total. Kersenbrock led the Jays by tying for fifth place with a 162 (+20) finish.
