Battle of Top Teams Ends in a Draw, No. 2 Creighton 1, No. 7 Akron 1

OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 2 Creighton Men's Soccer team battled No. 7 Akron to a 1-1 Draw on the opening day of play at the Ameritas Classic at Morrison Stadium on Friday, Aug. 31.
The draw sent both the Zips and the Jays to 1-0-1 on the season. It also extended Creighton's home undefeated streak to 17 games.
Creighton took the lead in the 24th minute as junior Sean Kim delivered his third goal of the season. Kim captured a deflected shot by senior Jose Gomez along the left side of the field, then sent a crossing shot towards the right post. Kim's shot glanced off the post and bounded into the net at 23:22.
A defensive half depleted both teams as the period finished with a combined 11 shots, six for Akron and five for the Jays. Akron managed two corners in the first period, but the Jays took the 1-0 lead into the break.
Half number two continued to display why each team is so highly ranked in the nation as the Zips and the Jays matched each other stride for stride.
Creighton claimed the first scoring opportunity as Gomez fired a shot in the 52nd minute that was blocked. Moments later the Jays earned their first two corner kicks, but were unable to convert.
In the 57th minute, Akron broke through for the game-tying goal. Alfred Koroma headed in a crossing pass from DeAndre Yeldin with 30:36 remaining.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 the rest of the way.
Akron appeared to have scored the game winning goal in the 97th minute, but the shot by Aodhan Quinn was waived off by an offside penalty.
Kim now has three of Creighton's four goals this season.
Sophomore Alex Bolowich earned his first start of the season in the goal, grabbing four saves. Akron's David Meves, meanwhile, finished with three.
Akron closed the contest with a 15-12 edge in shots and claimed a 6-3 nod on corner kicks.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 2 as the Jays face Rutgers at 2:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights fell to SIUE, 1-0, in the first match of the Ameritas Classic earlier today.
