
Jays to Open MVC Play at Drake

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's soccer team will begin Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Drake.
Scouting the No. 12 Creighton Bluejays (5-3-1):
After suffering back-to-back losses to Saint Louis (L, 1-3) on Sept. 22 and at Tulsa (L, 0-2) on Sept. 25, Creighton will look to get back on track as the Jays open Missouri Valley Conference play at Drake on Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Bluejays lead the overall series with Drake 22-3-7, including a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs on Oct. 26, 2011 in Omaha. The last time the Jays went to Des Moines, Iowa was on Oct. 20, 2010, a 2-1 win.
The Jays have struggled over their past four matches, scoring four goals and
surrendering eight. Creighton has gone 1-3-0 in their last four. Offensively the Jays will look to freshman Timo Pitter, junior Sean Kim and senior Jose Gomez to provide the spark. The trio are tied for the team lead with six points this season. Kim, however, has not scored since the second match of the season.
Defensively the Jays have allowed 10 goals in 2012 after giving up just five last season. Sophomore Alex Bolowich has earned the start in goal in each of the last two matches. Bolowich has 27 saves on the season and a 1.29 Goals Against Average (GAA).
Scouting the Drake Bulldogs (1-7-2):
Drake enters the MVC opener winless in its last seven matches. The Bulldogs have gone 0-5-2 since defeating Loyola-Chicago at home on Aug. 30.
In their last contest the Bulldogs were beaten up by Memphis, 0-5, on Sept. 22.
Drake has scored eight goals this season, notching more than one goal only in the 3-1 win over Loyola-Chicago.
Fifth-year senior Michael Thaden leads Drake with two goals in 2012, while junior Addison Eck shares the points lead with one goal and two assists.
In goal Drake has turned to junior Rich Gallagher for all but 20 minutes. Gallagher has allowed 21 goals for a 2.05 GAA, recording 50 saves for a .704 save percentage.
The Jays saw Drake earlier this season as the Bulldogs faced William & Mary and Old Dominion at Morrison Stadium in the Creighton Invitational on Sept. 14 & Sept. 16.
League Openers:
Creighton is 13-4-4 (.714) in MVC opening games. Last season the Jays fell to Missouri State 0-1 on Oct. 12. Creighton, however, is just 4-3-3 (.550) in conference openers since 2003.
Bouncing Back:
Since the program restarted in 1990 Creighton is 53-23-14 (.667) following a loss. Since the start of the 2007 season, the Jays are 13-2-3 following a loss (.806). Since 2007 the only other time the Jays suffered back-to-back losses was in 2010 to Bradley on Nov. 6 (L, 1-2) and Nov. 12 (L, 2-3).
Last Time the Jays Dropped Three Straight:
The Jays will look to avoid three consecutive losses for the first time since the final match of 2005 and the first two matches of 2006. During that span the Jays fell at No. 15 Clemson (L, 0-1 on Dec. 2, 2005), vs. No. 12 Indiana (L, 0-1 (2ot) on Aug. 25, 2006) and vs. No. 15 Notre Dame (L, 1-4 on Aug. 27, 2006).
Creighton has not lost three consecutive matches in one season since 2001, when the Jays fell to UW-Milwaukee (L, 0-3 on Sept. 17), Ohio State (L, 1-4 on Sept. 21) and Penn State (L, 1-2 on Sept. 23).
