Jays Pull Away from Mavericks for 4-1 Win

OMAHA, Neb. - Behind three second half goals, the Creighton women's soccer team pulled away for a 4-1 win over Nebraska Omaha on Friday, Sept. 7.
The win lifted the Jays to 2-4-1 on the season, while Nebraska Omaha fell to 0-6.
Senior Brittney Neumann got the Jays off on the right foot late in the opening period. Neumann blasted her second goal of the season through Nebraska Omaha goalkeeper Meaghan Clark's arms and into the back of the net. Neumann's goal was sent to her on a direct entry from freshman Jill Richgels.
Creighton coasted into halftime with a 1-0 lead. The Jays held a 6-3 edge in shots in the first half and had the lone corner kick.
Nebraska Omaha came out with a strong sense of urgency in the opening 10 minutes of the second frame. The Mavericks controlled possession and their increase pressure produced a result in the 59th minute. UNO's Jordyn Braun fired a shot off the post, then Danielle Archuleta corralled the ball and sent in the game-tying goal at 58:45.
The Mavericks goal served as a wake-up call to the Jays as Creighton responded quickly, 78 seconds to be precise. With possession after the goal, the Bluejays attacked immediately, forcing the ball deep into the Mavericks zone and earning a corner kick along the left side of the field.
Richgels sent the corner into the top of the box, where freshman Maddie Nelson struck. Nelson fired the ball towards the net with her right foot for her first goal as a Bluejay at the 60:03 mark. It was also Nelson's first shot for Creighton.
Just four minutes later, Creighton converted its next scoring opportunity. Junior Kelsey O'Donnell cleared a ball from deep in the defensive end to Neumann just inside midfield. Neumann blazed past two Maverick defenders for a breakaway opportunity, dribbling the ball over 50 yards. Finally Neumann slammed in her second goal of the match and her 27th overall as a Jay.
Sophomore Madelyn Buckner put the match away in the 77th minute as she headed in her first goal of the season off a pass from senior Gabriela Guillén.
Senior Katie Jo Swanson put the topping on a stellar second half as the Jays' keeper shut down UNO's Archuleta on a breakaway with just under five minutes remaining. Swanson finished the match with three save, while Clark had two for the Mavericks.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 as the Bluejays travel to Fullerton, Calif. to take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans.
