SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Christian Blandon's goal in the 69th minute pushed the No. 3 Creighton men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 7.
The win moved the Jays to 3-0-1 on the season and extended Creighton's unbeaten streak against California opponents to 17 matches, 14-0-3. Santa Clara, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 this season.
The goal came at 68:24 as fellow freshman Vincent Keller sent a pass to Blandon along the right corner of the penalty area. Blandon sent a shot screaming past Bronco goalkeeper Larry Jackson's outstretched hands and just inside the left post. It was Blandon's second goal of the season and second in as many games.
That was all the offense that the Creighton defense, led by sophomore keeper Alex Bolowich, would need. The Bluejays limited Santa Clara to just 11 shots and four shots on goal in the match. Bolowich closed the match with four saves in net for Creighton, while Santa Clara's Jackson notched three saves.
It is Bolowich's second consecutive shutout in his third start of the 2012 season.
Creighton outshot Santa Clara, 14-11, and held the same edge, 14-11, in corner kicks.
The Jays return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 9 as Creighton faces the Saint Mary's Gaels in Moraga, Calif. at 5 p.m.
