OMAHA, Neb. - Despite a two run rally in the ninth, the Creighton baseball team suffered a 6-3 loss to Kansas State on Tuesday, April 30.
The loss dropped the Jays to 24-11 on the season, while Kansas State moved to 32-14 overall.
Kansas State took advantage of a leadoff walk in the second to take a 1-0 lead. RJ Santigate walked, went to third on a two-out single by Lance Miles and scored via a single from leadoff man, Ross Kivett.
The Bluejays answered in the fourth as sophomore Jake Peter opened the frame with a triple to left-center and scored on an RBI ground-out from freshman Reagan Fowler.
Kansas State, however, answered in the top of the fifth on a leadoff triple from Kivett followed by an RBI grounder from Jared King. The Wildcats added a run in the sixth on a single and a stolen base by Santigate, followed by a sacrifice and an RBI grounder from Miles.
Following a 50-minute rain delay, Creighton's deficit grew to 5-1 in the eighth as Kivett plated Mitch Meyer with his second triple of the game into left-center, then scored via an RBI single from Tanner Witt. Kansas State added an insurance run in the ninth.
Joe Flattery earned the win (3-4) for the Wildcats, allowing one run in two innings of relief. Creighton freshman Matt Warren took the loss (1-2), surrendering one run on one hit and one walk in two innings of work.
Creighton senior Mark Winkelman recorded his 123rd career appearance for the Jays, tying a Creighton and MVC record. Winkelman tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, coming on in the second inning. Winkelman tied former Bluejay Scott Reese (2004-07) in career appearances.
The Jays scratched across two runs in the ninth on one-out singles by sophomore Kevin Lamb and junior Ben Lahn, a walk to senior Jordan Makovicka. Freshman Tommy Clouthier drove home Lamb with an RBI groundout, then Lahn scored via a wild pitch.
Offensively the Jays were led by two hits from junior Brad McKewon and Lamb. Fowler extended his reached base streak to 31 with a hit-by-pitch in the sixth.
