Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight With Sweep of DePaul

OMAHA, Neb. -- Kelli Browning had 13 kills and became the 10th player in Creighton history to reach 1,000 career kills in a 3-0 win over DePaul on Sunday afternoon in Omaha.
Scores of Creighton's fifth straight win were 25-17, 25-15, 25-12. The Bluejays extended their lead in the BIG EAST standings to two games, improving to 17-7 (10-1 BIG EAST), while DePaul dropped to 3-20 (1-10 BIG EAST).
In addition to Browning's 13 kills, Jess Bird and Lauren Smith had eight terminations each. Melanie Jereb had a season-best 19 digs in her first full match as CU's libero, subbing in for an injured Kate Elman. Browning and Michelle Sicner each had eight blocks, with Sicner spreading around 36 assists on the afternoon.
Creighton hit .284 in the match and finished with 46 kills, four aces, 62 digs and 14 blocks. DePaul had 24 kills, two aces, 44 digs and seven blocks on .009 hitting.
The Blue Demons were paced by 11 kills from Saige Gallop, while Colleen Smith dished 19 assists.
The Bluejays took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in the opener. CU broke free from a 13-11 lead with a 9-2 run that featured three blocks by Browning. Earlier in the match Browning had surpassed 1,000 kills on a putaway to give the Jays a 7-5 lead. Browning finished the set with four kills and five blocks while Sicner contributed 14 assists.
Creighton held DePaul to -.061 hitting in a 25-15 win in the second set. Browning again had four kills while Sicner had 11 assists and five blocks. Jereb added seven of CU's 28 digs in the second set. Serving specialist Lizzy Stivers recorded her first career kill on set point to help the Jays take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Creighton had a 9-7 lead in the third set before Sicner served an 11-0 flurry that put the match out-of-reach. Browning had consecutive kills to end the contest with a 25-12 margin.
Creighton returns to action next Saturday with a 6 pm match vs. Georgetown.
