
Volleyball Drops Regular-Season Finale to Pirates

OMAHA, Neb. -- Seton Hall earned a regular-season sweep over Creighton Volleyball with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 win in Omaha over the Bluejays on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Creighton (23-8, 16-2 BIG EAST) had its 11-match win streak snapped, but will still be the top seed at next week's BIG EAST Tournament and play in a 3 pm Central semifinal vs. fourth-seeded Xavier. Seton Hall (27-6, 15-3 BIG EAST) will be the second seed in the tournament and take on third-seed and host Marquette at 5:30 pm on Friday.
Seton Hall controlled the match for much of the day. The Pirates broke free from an 11-all score in the first set with five straight points on Sarah Kenneweg's serve. CU got within 20-19, but no closer, as the Pirates won 25-20. Seton Hall had seven blocks in the first set, forcing Creighton into .000 hitting despite 14 kills.
Seton Hall steadily pulled away in the second set, allowing CU just four points on its serve, in a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 intermission lead. Danielle Schroeder had five kills in the frame for The Hall, while Shelbey Manthorpe dished 15 assists.
Leading 7-5 in the third set, the Pirates pulled away with a 9-2 run that made it a 16-7 margin. CU would fight back to claw within 18-14 late, but would get no closer as the Pirates snapped CU's nine-match home win streak. Molly Grammer had six kills in seven swings during the final frame, including a kill on match point.
Grammer and Schroeder each had 10 kills, while Tessa Fournier added a team-best 17 digs for the victors. Seton Hall had 42 kills, two aces, 54 digs and 13 blocks on .292 hitting.
Jess Bird paced Creighton with 11 kills, while Melanie Jereb had a match-best 18 digs. Creighton hit .121 and tallied 40 kills, 48 digs and seven blocks. The Jays were also held without a service ace after dealing 11 aces in Friday's win over Villanova.
