OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Men's Basketball team improved to 8-2 with its 24th straight home win, rallying for a 91-88 victory in double-overtime over South Dakota on Tuesday night.
Creighton fell behind 15-5 in the opening minutes and its only lead of the first half was 3-2. Tre Burnette entered the game averaging 6.3 points per game but did much of the early damage, as he had a season-best 16 points by halftime as the Coyotes took a 28-25 lead into the break.
The Bluejays would retake the lead at 36-34 on a lay-up by James Milliken with 14:40 left in the second half, one of seven lead changes on the evening. Just when it appeared that CU was pulling away, the Summit League visitors made a rally. The Bluejays led by nine with 2:59 left in regulation, but USD scored on six straight possessions, including a three-pointer by Tyler Larson at the final horn that swished through the net and was counted after a replay review.
Creighton would rebuild its lead in overtime, going ahead 74-67 with 3:05 left. Another Larson trey trimmed the deficit to four, and a three-point play by Brandon Bos cut CU's lead to 74-73 with 2:06 left. Austin Chatman scored with just under a minute left to put CU up three, only to see Trey Norris sink a trifecta with 34.2 seconds left. Creighton would hold the ball for the last shot, only to see Chatman's jumper bounce off the rim.
In the second overtime, two free throws by Larson with 3:12 left gave USD its first lead since the 7:51 mark of the second half. Once again Milliken stepped up, sinking a three-pointer to put CU up two and then driving for a lay-up with 1:56 to play as Creighton took a four-point lead.
After Bos made two free throws with 1:38 left, Milliken drained yet another triple to give CU a five-point lead. Avery Dingman split two free throws with 24.7 left, and Creighton once again had to hold on for dear life. Bos sank a three-pointer to halve the deficit and Chatman was fouled with 7.9 left. He made both, but Bos answered with his fourth trey of the evening with 2.8 seconds left and cut CU's margin to two. Chatman would be fouled with 0.9 left. He missed the first but made the second, and Will Artino would steal the inbounds pass to seal the victory for CU.
Chatman shook off a scoreless first half to compile his third straight career-high scoring performance with 24 points, while Milliken added a career-best 23 points off the bench for CU. Overall, CU's bench played 145 of the 250 minutes and outscored the Coyote reserves, 54-7. The Bluejays shot 43.5 percent for the game, including 42.3 percent from deep (11-26) and were also 26-of-35 from the line (74.3 percent).
USD (3-7) was paced by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Larson, 24 points and 10 rebounds by Burnette and 23 more from Bos. The Coyotes shot 41.4 percent from the field, 11-of-24 from deep (45.8 percent) and sank 19-of-22 free throws (86.4 percent).
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Saint Mary's (5-1) in a 1:15 pm home game.
