
Bluejays WBB Dropped By St. John's, 61-38

OMAHA, Neb. - Struggling against the best defensive unit in the BIG EAST, the Creighton women's basketball team fell to St. John's 61-38 on Sunday, Jan. 11.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 8-9 on the season and 1-5 in the BIG EAST, while St. John's moved to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action.
A defensive battle throughout, Creighton got two quick three-pointers from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko to take a 6-2 advantage (18:20). St. John's responded with eight of the next 10 points to claim its first lead at 10-8 (14:04).
The Bluejays quickly regained the lead with back-to-back buckets from sophomores Brianna Rollerson and MC McGrory (12-10) with 12:31 left in the opening half.
St. John's tightened up its defense the rest of the way, holding Creighton to just one field goal in the final nine minutes to take a 22-19 lead into the break.
The Red Storm run continued into the second half as the Red Storm extended its lead to 10 (31-21) with 16:21 remaining.
The final blow from the Red Storm began with just over 11 minutes remaining. Up 43-31, St. John's used a 14-0 run over the next seven minutes to build a 57-31 edge.
Akin-Otiko led Creighton with 12 points, while St. John's got 22 points and nine rebounds from Aliyyah Handford.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, Jan. 16 as the Bluejays battle Providence at 7 pm (CT). The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
