OMAHA, Neb. - A 26-2 run spanning halftime lifted No. 21 Georgetown to a 67-40 win over Creighton before 17,499 fans at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Saturday.
The Bluejays missed 23 straight field goal attempts at one point during a drought that spanned more than 17 minutes, as Creighton (10-13, 1-9 BIG EAST) shot a season-low 20.8 percent on the day.
Georgetown (15-6, 7-3 BIG EAST), meanwhile, shot 50 percent from the floor and got 24 points from Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera.
Creighton fell into huge holes at the start of both halves. Smith-Rivera and L.J. Peak combined to score all the points as the Hoyas built a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes.
Creighton answered and used an 11-0 run to take its only lead of the game at 13-12, then moved that margin to 15-12 on a lay-up by Devin Brooks with 10:09 to play in the first half. The Bluejays then missed their final 12 shots of the half as the Hoyas used a 16-2 run to close the first half in a near-replay of the team's first meeting earlier in the month.
The Hoyas pulled away with the first 10 points of the second half, including five points from Smith-Rivera, to move ahead 38-17. Avery Dingman ended the scoring drought with a free throw with 15:21 to play, but CU would miss its first 11 shots of the second stanza before a Dingman three-pointer with 12:51 to play.
Creighton would get as close as 17 (56-39) before the Hoyas drained three-pointers on 3-of-4 possessions to bury the Bluejays comeback chances.
Dingman led Creighton with eight points, while Toby Hegner paced CU on the glass with eight rebounds. Coming off a season-best 13 three-pointers in a win over St. John's on Wednesday, the Bluejays shot 11-for-53 from the field (20.8 percent) overall and were 5-of-22 from three-point range (22.7 percent).
Smith-Rivera led all players with 24 points, while Jabril Trawick added 15 points. The Hoyas shot an even 50 percent for the game and made 10-of-23 three-point shots (43.5 percent). GU outrebounded the Bluejays 38-36, and 26-12 in the paint.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday at 8:15 pm Central when it visits Xavier.
NOTES: Creighton hosted its 3,000,000th fan all-time at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
