
Volleyball Wins Ninth Straight With Victory at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Creighton Volleyball team won its ninth straight match with a 3-1 win over Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday evening.
Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17.
Creighton improves to 14-7 (8-0 BIG EAST), while Butler dropped to 5-15 (2-6 BIG EAST).
"Butlers a really tough place to play and they have a lot of good parity," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We made some adjustments mid-match to help us and I'm pleased with the road win."
The Bluejays never trailed in the first set en route to a 25-14 victory. CU's lead was just 15-12 before a set-ending 10-2 run gave CU a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set saw Creighton pull away down the stretch, turning a 16-16 tie into a 21-17 advantage. The Bulldogs pulled within one at 23-22, before Creighton closed out the set.
Creighton trailed most of the third set. Down 21-17 late, the Jays drew within one at 21-20 and 22-21 before the Bulldogs got back-to-back kills from Briana Lilly to get to match point. The Bulldogs hit .385 in the third set to extend the match.
Creighton vaulted to an 8-2 lead to start the fourth set and never trailed in the final frame to beat the Bulldogs for the fourth straight meeting.
Jaali Winters (21 kills, 11 digs) and Maggie Baumert (46 assists, 15 digs) both had double-doubles for the Bluejays. Kate Elman had 14 digs while Jess Bird added a dozen digs, while Lauren Smith had 10 kills and a match-high five blocks.
Butler was paced by 15 kills from Briana Lilly, who hit .444.
Crieghton dominated the stat categories with big advantages in kills (60-49), aces 97-2), digs (70-51), blocks (9-7) and hitting percentage (.299-.205).
Creighton returns to action on Saturday with a 6 pm Central match at third-place Xavier (10-8, 6-2 BIG EAST).
NOTES: Kate Elman had two aces and now owns 90 in her career, passing Carolyn Decker for fifth in Creighton history .. Jaali Winters had her fifth match of 20 or more kills, more than any freshman in Creighton history ... Winters also passed 300 career kills in her 21st career match, fastest in program history ... Creighton has won 11 straight matches in October and is 26-3 in the month since the start of the 2012 season ... Creighton's nine-match win streak is its third-longest streak in program history, all of which have been attained in the last four seasons ...
