Omaha, Neb. - Despite two goals from junior Lauren Sullivan, the Creighton women's soccer team fell to Providence 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 10-7 on the season and 2-4 in BIG EAST play, while Providence moved to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Sullivan got Creighton off to a good start, scoring an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Sprinting through the defense, Sullivan dribbled the ball 30+ yards then hammered a shot off the hands of Providence goalkeeper Kristyn Shea from 10 yards away.
The Friars repsonded with goals in the 28th and 31st minute. Both Providence goals were unassisted as Casey Estey raced through three defenders to knot the match at 1-1 from 15 yards away.
Moments later Catherinne Zimmerman collected a deflected shot to give the Friars a 2-1 lead from 18 yards out.
Providence pushed its lead to 3-1 early in the second half behind a goal from 30 yards away by Christina Klaum.
Midway through the second half the Bluejays made things interesting as Sullivan headed in a corner served up by senior Jill Richgels in the 68th minute to make it 3-2.
Down the stretch the Bluejays had their chances to even the score, but were unable to push in the final goal.
Providence outshot the Bluejays 12-10, while Creighton held an edge on corners 6-4.
"Today wasn't the effort needed to get the result in a big game like this," said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "We feed off the effort of Sullivan and Roll, but to be a dangerous team we need every player to give that type of effort throughout the match."
Prior to Saturday's match the Bluejays outgoing senior class was honored, Kirstyn Corder, Alyssa Jara, Alissa Kohmetscher, Anastasia McCleary, Richgels and Kyla Salazar.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 22 as Creighton hosts Butler in Creighton's final home match of the season at 7:00 pm.
