Omaha, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer home season came to a close as the Bluejays fell to Butler in double overtime, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The loss dropped Creighton to 10-8-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. Butler, meanwhile, clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championship with a victory as the Bulldogs moved to 12-5-1 on the season and 5-2-0 in conference play.
Creighton fell behind 1-0 early in the second period as Sophia Maccagnone struck for her sixth goal of the season from 25 yards out. Maccagnone completed a three touch pass as Paige Monaghan redirected a pass from Halle Stelbasky.
The Bluejays pulled even in the 63rd minute as junior Emily Roll sent in a corner from the right side of the field that resulted in a hand ball penalty against the Bulldogs. Fellow junior Ylenia Sachau made the penalty hurt by converting the PK for her sixth goal of the season.
Butler looked to end the match as the first overtime period drew to a close when Stelbasky lined up a one-on-one with Creighton keeper Erin Scott. Having stopped four single-player matchups earlier in the contest, Scott forced Stelbasky's shot to the left where Sachau raced in for the team save to force a second extra session.
In the 107th minute of play, the Bulldogs saw a bounce go in their favor. This time Maccagnone lined up a shot from 28 yards away. Her strike clipped the foot a Bluejay and sailed into the top right corner of the net for the golden goal.
Creighton was outshot in the match 27-11, while Scott tied a career-high with 11 saves.
Following the loss head coach Ross Paule complimented his team's effort, specifically the play of Scott. "This hurts now, but Erin Scott should be proud of the way she played today."
Thursday's loss ended the Bluejays chances to make the BIG EAST Championships, but Paule believes there is much to play for in the final two matches.
"It's about taking pride about being a Creighton Bluejay. I tell them all the time we must take pride in everything we do, whether it is in the classroom, in practice or in the game. The last two games are another opportunity to do just that."
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday as the Bluejays travel to Xavier to battle the Musketeers at 12:00 pm.
