Creighton improves to 22-8 overall with its school-record 13th home win
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a 3-0 victory on Senior Day before 1,137 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday in Omaha.
Scores of the match were 26-24, 25-14, 25-18.
Creighton, which clinched a second straight BIG EAST title on Friday, improved to 22-8 overall and is 16-1 in league play. Butler was eliminated from league tournament consideration on Sunday and fell to 11-18 overall; 7-9 in BIG EAST play.
Jaali Winters had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs for her 13th straight match with double-figure kills, but the stars of the day on the Bluejay side were unquestionably its seniors. All five Bluejays opened the match on the floor, and Creighton's winningest senior class would combine for 10 kills, 52 of the team's 71 digs, all 34 assists and all seven aces. Creighton finished with 40 kills and 7.5 blocks on .152 hitting on the afternoon.
Anna Logan had 10 kills, 11 digs and six blocks for BU. The Bulldogs had 31 kills, 59 digs and 11 blocks but were held without an ace on .065 hitting.
Kate Elman had 24 digs and now stands just 36 digs shy of 2,000 in her career. Elman became the first player since 2001 to surpass 100 career aces with a service winner in the second set, and would later add her first kill since September of 2013.
Elman's high school and college teammate, Ashley Jansen, was also up to the task as she served up four aces and was one shy of her season-best with 14 digs.
Maggie Baumert directed the offense and finished with 29 assists, while Melanie Jereb produced her first kill since the league opener on Sept. 25th. Fittingly, the match ended when senior Lizzy Stivers put down her fourth kill of the season match point. Stivers had opened the match in the starting line-up for just the second time in 107 career appearances.
The momentum of the match turned late in the first set. Creighton trailed 22-19 late before a coming back to tie the score at 24-all. The Jays won the deuce points on kills from Jess Bird and Lauren Smith. Jess Bird led CU with five kills in the frame.
Creighton led the second set 15-14 before Jansen authored a set-ending 10-0 run that included two aces, and once again ended on a kill from Smith.
Winters heated up in the third set with seven of her match-best 10 kills. After taking a 10-3 lead to start the set, Creighton would fall behind 13-11 as Butler answered on a long serving run from Kodi Smith. Just as quickly Jereb got the Jays back in front for good with four straight points. After a sideout, Jansen put together a 5-0 burst to push the Bluejay margin to 20-14. Stivers ended the match with her sixth career kill to set up the postgame ceremony that honored the senior class.
With the win, the Creighton seniors improved to 99-30 over the past four years, including a 61-8 record in conference play. The group has won three conference titles in the last four years, own four straight 20-win seasons, and with a top-20 RPI are in line to become Creighton's first women's program in history to reach four straight NCAA Tournaments.
The Bluejays close the regular-season on Friday with a 7 pm Central match at Georgetown before returning home to host the BIG EAST Championships on Nov. 27-28. Rounding out the BIG EAST Championship field will be Villanova, Marquette and Xavier, with seeds 2-4 still to be determined.
