Creighton closes the regular-sason 17-1 in the BIG EAST
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Playing without senior leaders Kate Elman and Maggie Baumert, the Creighton Volleyball team closed the regular-season with a 3-2 comeback victory over Georgetown on Friday night. Scores of the match in favor of Creighton were 23-25, 26-28, 30-28, 26-24, 15-7.
Creighton saved a pair of match points during the third set in the triumph.
Creighton will take a 23-8 record into next week's BIG EAST Championship after finishing BIG EAST play with a 17-1 league record. The Bluejays, who locked up the No. 1 seed last Friday, will play at 12:30 pm on Friday at D.J. Sokol Arena against a fourth-seed that will be determined on Saturday evening when league play elsewhere concludes.
Four Bluejays had a double-double in the win -- juniors Jess Bird (15 kills, 22 digs) and Lauren Smith (16 kills and 11 blocks) and freshmen Jaali Winters (25 kills, 14 digs) and Samantha Bohnet (41 assists, 13 digs). Bohnet split time with Ashley Jansen (22 assists, nine digs) and far exceeded her career totals of seven assists and no digs entering the night.
"I thought Sam (Bohnet) did a fantastic job," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Kelsey (O'Connell) comes up with a huge solo block to win game three for us. It's the strength of this team that top-to-bottom, people can come in and get the job done."
Georgetown (10-21, 4-14 BIG EAST) was paced by 23 kills and 15 digs by Alyssa Sinnette, while Lauren Saar had 19 kills and 20 digs on Senior Night.
"Georgetown played a fantastic match," said Booth. "We just really struggled to hold them defensively. Game one and two could have gone either way, as could have game 3 or 4. There's things I wished we'd done better but I've said over and over that this team's character is unmatched and they showed it again. With our backs against the wall and match points against them, they stepped up and won again."
The comeback from an 0-2 deficit at the intermission marked Creighton's third such comeback this season, joining similar victories over Kansas State and DePaul.
"It might be the best thing for us to go through this and win," said Booth. "It's going to be a matter of survive-and-advance in the conference tournament and NCAA Tournament, and this is another lesson that you never give up."
Creighton steadily got better as the night went on, with different players stepping up each set. Bohnet had seven assists and seven digs in the first set of her first career start, while Melanie Jereb had eight of her career-high 30 digs in the second frame. Winters had 10 kills in the third set, Smith had three kills and five blocks in the fourth set, and Bird put down five kills in six swings during the final frame. Creighton hit .722 in the fifth set with 13 kills on 18 swings.
Creighton would finish with 76 kills, three aces, 98 digs and 16 blocks while hitting .257. Georgetown tallied 74 kills, six aces, 96 digs and 11 blocks on .212 hitting.
The match featured 19 lead changes and a season-high 46 ties.
