Creighton sweeps Marquette for the second straight meeting
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Creighton Volleyball team solidified its hold on first place in the BIG EAST Conference on Friday with a 3-0 win at Marquette while second-place Villanova fell in four sets at Butler. Scores of the match were 27-25, 25-19, 25-19 in favor of Creighton, which improved to 19-8 (13-1 BIG EAST).
After Friday's play, Villanova is 11-3 and in second place, one-half game ahead of third-place Xavier (10-3). The two teams face off on Saturday in Cincinnati. In fourth place is Marquette (18-8), which fell to 9-4 in BIG EAST action.
Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth pointed to the end of the first set as the key to the match, as Creighton overcame a late 24-22 deficit to take a 27-25 first set: "I think coming back to win the first set was a big momentum shift for us. It gave us confidence going to game 2 with that under our belt, though this team has shown it won't roll over and will continue to battle."
Creighton trailed nearly all the first set, falling behind by as much as four (12-8), only to knot the score at 17-all. The Bluejay comeback started while trailing 22-20 and calling its final timeout. After four straight sideouts had the Bluejays on the brink of a game one defeat at 24-22, the Jays rallied. Three straight attack errors by MU got CU in position for a set point of its own, only to hit long to even the score at 25-all. Once again two straight Golden Eagle attack errors gave CU the 27-25 set, a crucial victory since the teams entered the night a combined 28-1 when winning the first set. Jaali Winters led CU with six kills in the first set, while Jess Bird had five kills and four digs.
The next two sets saw Creighton claim identical 25-19 victories. In the second set Creighton went ahead 10-5 and never relented, hitting .357 and pulling away for the 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set, Creighton overturned a 13-12 deficit into 22-17 lead while once again taking advantage of an error-prone Marquette side. Winters team-best 14th kill ended the night for CU's fourth straight win over the Golden Eagles.
Bird continued her resurgence with 13 kills and 11 digs while hitting .353, and Maggie Baumert dished 36 assists to go with her career-high 18 digs. The Jays finished with 49 kills, one ace, 64 digs and three blocks on .236 hitting overall.
"The key to our success was offensive parity," said Booth. "We had a lot of people Maggie (Baumert) could go to that could produce and that's tough to defend when in system, and we were in system a lot tonight."
MU was led by 14 kills and 13 digs from freshman Taylor Louis, who needed 50 swings and hit .060 to do so. She was the lone Golden Eagle player with more than eight kills. MU finished with 39 kills, two aces, 67 digs and 10.5 blocks on .111 hitting.
"Marquette's a great team who had a great atmosphere tonight," noted Booth. "That's a team that should be in the NCAA tournament and it's a big win for us over a team that entered the day in the top-25 of the RPI."
Creighton returns to action on Saturday night at 8 pm Central when it visits DePaul.
