Creighton earns fourth straight 20-win season
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Creighton Volleyball team earned its fourth straight 20-win season with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at DePaul on Saturday night in Chicago. Scores of the match in favor of CU were 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19.
Creighton improves to 20-8 on the year and is 14-1 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul drops to 15-12 (3-11 BIG EAST). The match was the 400th at Creighton for coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth, who has won 255 of those.
Jaali Winters (18 kills, 14 digs) and Jess Bird (11 kills, 11 digs) both had double-doubles for Creighton, while Marysa Wilkinson's 13 kills were one shy of her career-high. Creighton used four different setters during the match, with Maggie Baumert coming off the bench to dish a team-high 27 assists.
DePaul was paced by 14 kills from Jasmine King, who added eight blocks. The Blue Demons finished with 47 kills, six aces, 53 digs and 15 blocks on .220 hitting.
"I thought DePaul really played a great match and did some things to exploit some weaknesses of ours," said Booth. "I love the resolve of this team, that even if not everything's going perfectly they stay composed, compete and figure out ways to win. I think that's the reason this is a special group."
The Bluejays never trailed in the first set, racing out of the gates to an 11-3 lead. The hosts answered with the next six points to make things interesting, but CU would remain in control to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Wilkinson and Winters both had six kills in the first set for CU.
The second set saw DePaul make a comeback from a 15-11 deficit and turn that into a 19-16 lead. The Jays got within 23-22 late before two straight points for DePaul ended the frame. King had six kills in seven swings for a DePaul team that hit .361 in the second set.
Creighton never trailed in the third set, but it didn't come easy. The Bluejays turned to Baumert at setter and she provided 14 assists as Creighton won the final two points for the 25-23 win. Winters had six more kills in the third set while reaching 400 career kills (28 matches) quicker than any Bluejay in school history.
The fourth set was deadlocked at 14-all before the Bluejays closed out the Blue Demons with an 11-5 surge that was capped by Winters 18th kill of the evening. Just like the first set, Winters and Wilkinson led the way offensively with four kills apiece.
"We played 14 different people tonight," said Booth. "Not all of them are regulars on the court, but each of them came in and did a fantastic job and that was great to see."
Creighton returns home next weekend, beginning with a 7 pm home match vs. second-place Xavier (15-10, 11-3 BIG EAST) that will also air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
