BACK-to-BACK! Volleyball Clinches BIG EAST Title With Sweep of Xavier

Double-doubles by Baumert & Winters help Bluejays to 3rd league title in 4 years
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball team clinched its third conference title in four years with a 3-0 sweep of second-place Xavier on Friday night before 1,913 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.
Creighton improves to 21-8 with the win and 15-1 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier dropped to 15-11 and is 11-4 in the BIG EAST.
The Bluejays were led by double-doubles from Maggie Baumert (34 assists, 10 digs) and Jaali Winters (12 kills, 13 digs), while Jess Bird pounded a match-high 14 kills.
Creighton finished with 45 kills, six aces, 53 digs and 10 blocks on .284 hitting.
Xavier was paced by eight kills form both Kristen Massa and Sofia Peterson, while All-BIG EAST performer Abbey Bessler was lmited to six kills on 27 swings.
The first set was tightly-contested with nine ties and five lead changes. Just after Xavier took its largest lead of the night at 18-14, Kate Elman served CU back into the lead with an 9-0 run featuring three aces. From there, the Jays cruised home, winning the first set on the sixth kill of the match by Winters.
Creighton took a 2-0 lead into intermission after winning the second set, 25-22. With the score knotted at 16-all, Winters unleashed a 4-0 serivce run and Amanda Foje a 3-0 burst as the lead moved to 22-17. Xavier got within 22-20 before Creighton pulled away, winning the set as Winters and Lauren Smith combined to block Peterson. It was CU's sixth block of the set.
The third set was all Creighton, as the Bluejays hit .625 in the frame. Melanie Jereb compiled a 4-0 run at the service line as Creighton went ahead 10-6, and Baumert served up a 5-0 run as the lead reached 19-10. Senior Lizzy Stivers came off the bench for her first career block to make it 23-11, then got the Jays to the edge of match point on her third kill of the fall. Creighton would clinch the sweep and regular-season title on a service error by the Musketeers.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday at 2 pm when it hosts Butler. The Bluejays will recognize their five seniors (Elman, Stivers, Baumert, Jereb and Ashley Jansen) following the contest.
NOTES: After no titles from 1994-2011, Creighton has now won regular-season titles in 2012 (MVC), 2014 (BIG EAST) and 2015 (BIG EAST) .. Creighton would go on to win the conference tournament title in both 2012 and 2014 ... Jaali Winters' 12 kills were her 12th straight match of 10 or more kills, which sets a Creighton freshman record. She had shared the previous mark with Amanda Cvejdlik entering the day ... Creighton is 8-0 all-time against Xavier, with all those matches occuring in the last 25 months ... Creighton has won 16 of its last 17 matches ...
