Omaha, Neb. - Down 41-18 midway through the second quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team pulled even early the fourth quarter but ran out of gas in an 86-82 loss to Seton Hall on Thursday, Dec. 31.Â
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall moved to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Seton Hall point guard Shakena Richardson made every pass in the first quarter, amassing seven assists, as the Pirates raced out to a 30-13 edge. The Pirates pushed that margin to 23 with 6:23 remaining in the second on a trey from Tabatha Richardson-Smith. The trey lit a fire under the Bluejays, specifically freshman Audrey Faber.
Held without a point for the first 13:48, Faber erupted for 11 points in the second quarter. Her first bucket came on a driving layup with 6:12 left in the period, igniting an 11-2 run to bring the Bluejays back into the game. Seton Hall answered Faber's layup, but junior Lauren Works knocked down a trey from the left wing. A Creighton stop, results in a trey by Faber from the top of the key. Moments later Works took turned a fast break layup into a traditional three-point play to make it 43-29 (3:19).
Seton Hall hoped a trey from Claire Lundberg would break the Bluejays spirit, yet Faber had none of that. The Iowa native scored back-to-back buckets in just 25 seconds (46-33 with 2:09 left). Creighton didn't stop there as sophomore Jade Owens dropped in a running jumper from one step inside the paint, followed by another layup from Faber to make it 46-37 with 42 seconds left in the half.
Pirate buckets to close and open the half pushed Creighton's deficit back to 13 (50-37), but Faber was there with back-to-back treys. Creighton continued to claw its way back as the quarter went on, making it a four-point game via a trifecta from senior Tessa Leytem with 6:33 left (52-48). Trailing 60-53 with just over three minutes left, the Bluejays used a 9-3 run to make it a one-point game (63-62) heading to the fourth.
In the final period it was the Pirates scoring first with two free throws from Richardson-Smith. Creighton, however, pulled even for the first time since early in the first quarter when Works drained a trey from the right wing at 65-65. The long rally to pull even took its toll on the Bluejays as Seton Hall scored the next seven points (72-65). Down 79-71 with 3:00 showing on the clock the Bluejays used on final push to get within one-point twice in the final minute, but Creighton was unable to get over the hump.
Faber finished the game with a career-best 29 points, while Works also posted a career-high of 16 points. Lamberty posted her second career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Owens finished with 14 points.
Seton Hall got 27 points from Richardson-Smith, while Richardson delivered 18 points and Aleesha Powell posted 14.
