Baseball Claims 5-1 Win at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Taking advantage of four Roadrunner errors, the Creighton baseball team posted a 5-1 win over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The Bluejays got on the board first in the top of the second as junior Ryan Fitzgerald opened the frame with a triple to left-center. Following a walk to junior Harrison Crawford, freshman Luke Horanski lifted a sac fly to right to make it 1-0.
CSU Bakersfield answered with its first run of the series in the bottom half of the frame, plating one run on three hits.
The game remained scoreless into the seventh inning, leaving both starting pitchers with a no-decision.
In the top of the seventh Creighton benefitted from two errors as the Bluejays took a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Nicky Lopez reached on an error to get things started. One out later junior Brett Murray singled through the right side to put runners at the corners. Fitzgerald followed with a safety squeeze to third to bring home Lopez. A throwing error allowed Fitzgerald to reach safely and scamper all the way to third, while Murray scored on the error. Moments later a wild pitch paved the way for Fitzgerald to score, making it 4-1.
Another Roadrunner error helped Creighton add a run in the top of the eighth as sophomore Daniel Woodrow reached on an error. He stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Lopez took advantage with a sac fly to center.
Five Creighton hurlers combined to hold CSU Bakersfield to one run on 11 hits. Starter Matt Warren allowed one run on six hits in five innings.
Freshman Rollie Lacy (1-0) picked up his first win as a Bluejay with one inning of scoreless relief in the six. Junior John Oltman, senior Mark Lukowski and senior Max Ising combined for a scoreless final three frames, allowing a combined four hits and a walk.
As he did on Friday, Murray led the offensive charge with three hits, while Fitzgerald was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Creighton will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 2 pm (CT), the last time the Bluejays opened a season with a three-game sweep was in 2013 as Creighton took all three games at Dallas Baptist.
