OMAHA, Neb -- Roosevelt Jones' bank shot with 1.9 seconds left lifted No. 19 Butler to a 58-56 win over Creighton on Monday night before a sellout crowd of 17,971 fans at CenturyLInk Center Omaha.
Austin Chatman and Devin Brooks both had 17 points for Creighton, which fell to 12-15 (3-11 BIG EAST). Butler improved to 19-7 (9-4 BIG EAST) to remain in second place in the BIG EAST, two games behind league-leading Villanova.
Butler was led by 19 points by Kellen Dunham, while Jones had 18 points. The Bulldogs trailed 54-48 with three minutes to go before closing the game on a 10-2 run, including the final five from Jones.
Chatman and Brooks had the hot hands early for Creighton, which overcame a 14-8 deficit to take a 25-18 lead late in the first half. BU rallied within two before Chatman gave CU a 29-25 halftime lead on a pair of free throws with 4.6 left. He finished the first half with 13 points.
Butler scored the first seven points of the second stanza to retake the lead, 32-29, one of five lead changes after intermission. Creighton would counter with an 8-0 run to retake the lead, and would take three different six points leads, only to have Butler immediately answer each time.
Down 54-48 with less than three minutes to go, Dunham made a lay-up. Alex Barlow would then steal a pass and go coast-to-coast for a lay-up, then sink a free throw to draw the Bulldogs within one. Butler's run stretched to eight straight points on Jones' three-point play with 1:52 remaining, giving Butler a 56-54 edge.
Following a timeout, Creighton countered, taking advantage of two offensive rebounds to get a score by Brooks to even the score with 1:29 left.
Both teams would trade misses, as Butler called for time with 43.5 ticks left and 30 on the shot clock. Dunham would miss a contested fadeaway jumper, but Butler point guard Barlow emerged with the ball and the Bulldogs held it for the last shot.
Jones beat his man off the dribble, drove down the lane, and banked in a shot from the right block with 1.9 seconds left as Butler went ahead, 58-56.
After both teams called timeout, Creighton had Rick Kreklow inbound the ball. He ran the baseline as Chatman attempted to draw a foul while setting a pick, but no call was made amid contact from Kameron Woods. Kreklow then threw a baseball pass to 6-foot-11 Will Artino at the top of the key. He immediately flipped it back to Brooks, but his 35-foot heave at the buzzer hit high off the backboard as Butler escaped with its first road win in Omaha since 1934.
Creighton shot 43.8 percent for the game, including 7-for-20 from three-point range (35.0 percent). Both teams had 29 rebounds, and CU had 15 assists against just eight turnovers.
In addition to 37 points combined from Dunham (19) and Jones (18), Woods had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs, playing without injured forward Andrew Chrabascz (broken hand), outscored the Bluejays 40-22 in the paint and shot 49.1 percent from the field.
Creighton next plays in eight days when it starts a two-game road trip with an 8:15 pm game at DePaul, while Butler visits Xavier on Saturday afternoon.
